You have got to be kidding me. He was fined a freaking loonie. How appropriate in today's version of court. Waste of time and resources if this is the result.

It also cost him the $5,000.....

Judge Terence Wright ordered Lopes to donate the $5,000, money he paid in bail, to the Heritage Conservation Trust Fund and also prohibited him from approaching wildlife for the next two years.

How's that legal to order someone to donate to a charity?

It's legal to order restitution, whether the party is the victim of fraud or vandalism for example. Usually the money is paid to the court, and the court makes the victim whole. But the deer doesn't have a bank account so . . . ;)
