Obama? Where were the trains heading? This looks like an accident that could be prevented by the Energy East Pipeline, not Keystone.

But the anti-oil loons keep telling us pipelines are dangerous.

Betcha the folks on the reserve wishes the pipelines were in use.

There are more oil pipelines in Alberta than rail lines. Unlike your average municipal sewer or water pipe, oil pipes are meticulously maintained to much stricter standards. For the oil companies - there is a huge amount of money to be lost if a pipeline bursts; both in lost material and lack of flow until the pipe is repaired. The financial incentive alone is enough for the companies to keep things in working order, never mind the incredible (and justifiable) environmental backlash if a pipeline did burst.

As for rail cars, meh. There is insurance for the lost oil. The railway wont stop running for more than a day over this.

Guess the railway has absolutely no responsibility in this... it's all Obama's fault. I know it's a bit late, but can we blame him for the Lac Megantic derailment too?

I agree that pipeline is a lot safer than rail, but it's not all Obama's fault. Oil has been shipped by rail within Canada for a long time where it could have been replaced by pipeline. Anybody know why not?

If I was to hazard a guess it would be that the environmental movement has been involved in opposing big oil since the 60's so it was much easier and likely cheaper to keep it business as usual when it comes to the moving of that commodity by rail.

The sad ramifications of the no pipelines anywhere idiocy is quite apparent. We are going to see more of these rail accidents in the years to come because, big oil isn't going anywhere and their product is going to move no matter how many drum circles, native bands, celebrities and misguided or misinformed well intentioned people try to prevent it.

I doubt it's mostly the environmental movement. We've had plenty of pipes built without fuss in the past. Most people don't even know about the pipes because they went in with so little fuss.

More likely that it's expensive to build pipelines and the volume to a particular destination may not make it worthwhile.

Besides, oil isn't the only dangerous stuff on the rails...
