Ex-immigration minister Jason Kenney ‘dictated’ niqab ban at citizenship ceremony, court told

A ban on veils while taking the citizenship oath was driven by Kenney’s own ideology, say lawyers for Zunera Ishaq, who is challenging the policy in court.

that niqab does not fit into the mode of Canadian citizens.?

    It doesn't.

    Citizenship isn't a right, it's a privilege. Can't adhere to the rules,
    don't become a citizen.

    Period.

Kenney's reasons for the ban don't fly and can easily be overturned. But there is a perfectly valid reason: any time somebody takes an oath, they should have their face uncovered so we can see who is actually taking the oath. Seems to me that would pass constitutionality.

How many Muslims did you turn away? wouldn't surprise me if banks made exceptions for niqabs because they don't want trouble. But they should stick to their guns.

but look at Alberta - they were fine not allowing the Hutterites to not have their pics taken, as soon as the Muslim women wanted to stay covered Alta changes the rules. When will be learn we can't appease anybody for rules that make sense. In BC sikhs can ride motorcycles or work at hardhat jobs just wearing their turbans. How stupid is that? Once we go down that road, don't be surprised if groups that are the boogeyman du jur also want exexmptions.

No niqabs around at that time... even now, I don't remember the last time I saw one... a hijab every once in a while though.

I remember a few years ago a Sikh man claimed their was a smaller version of the turban for wearing under motorcycle helmets.

Can't argue with that. Minimum requirement to say the least. IMHO the bar is set too low......
Don't nudge it to let the low life's in.

The person should be required to identify themselves, when it is necessary(taking an oath would certainly meet that condition). However, outside of someone verifying that persons identity, to require people to then violate their Religious practice during the Ceremony is antithetical to Religious Freedom.

The niqab is not, repeat NOT, a religious garment.
It's a cultural symbol of oppression.
