HMCS Toronto patrolled the Black Sea for the past week of its NATO exercise with a grounded Sea King helicopter and one broken generator on the 22-year-old Canadian war vessel.
"BeaverFever" said It sure originated with him but you have to ask whether that's still relevant, given that we are closing in on 9 years of "The Harper Government"
The Sea King mess can be mostly placed at the feet of Chretien and Martin.
If you can fault the Conservatives for anything, it's for not canceling the contract with Sikorsky (who's having serious issues delivering a viable product) and buying EH-101's as per the original plan.
After the loss of so much money with the cancellation of the helicopters, it is understandable why they avoided the optics of ordering them all over again. Chretien's behaviour was criminal. The Canadian voter is as much to blame for it by affirming Chretien so completely afterwards.

That's pretty funny coming from people who still howl about Bush.

I agree that the cancellation was brutal, but let's be honest, most Canadians were sick of the PCs and Mulroney, especially after he brought in GST and did next to nothing to revive our dreadful economy.
Chretien's biggest promise - which he reneged on - was that he was going to get rid of the GST. That was one of the biggest reasons Canadians across the country voted Liberal in 1993. The helicopter contract was not a concern for most people.
Sept. 27, 1990: "I want this tax dead.'' - Liberal Leader Jean Chretien
Oct. 29, 1990: "I am opposed to the GST. I have always been opposed to it, and I will always be opposed to it. It is a tax that is both regressive and discriminatory." - Liberal Leader Jean Chretien
Feb. 11, 1993: "I say we will replace the tax. This is a commitment. You will judge me by that. If the GST is not gone, I will have a tough time the election after that." - Liberal Leader Jean Chretien
May 2, 1994: "We hate it and we will kill it." - Prime Minister Jean Chretien
Wasn't a single off the cuff comment, the man ran with this ball for years and years.
Then he got elected and, well you know, he kinda forgot about it... and any attempts to refresh his memory resulted in a neanderthal like grunt and dismissive wave of his hand.

Is this the chopper without the 30 min run dry ability for hydraulics, if I recall correctly it needed 30 minute minimum?
The 30 minute run dry requirement is for the gearbox/transmission AFAIK.
The S-92 got an exemption on the basis that its design made total lube loss highly unlikely.
Then it (total lube loss) happened to a S-92 off the east coast, only one survivor.
... another legacy from Jean Cretin.
Still kicking us all these years later.

What a great fucking deal frick and frack got for us on that one.

When I can pay half a billion for none!

The "Red Book" should have won the Giller Prize for best work of Fiction.
