The Sea King mess can be mostly placed at the feet of Chretien and Martin.

If you can fault the Conservatives for anything, it's for not canceling the contract with Sikorsky (who's having serious issues delivering a viable product) and buying EH-101's as per the original plan.

After the loss of so much money with the cancellation of the helicopters, it is understandable why they avoided the optics of ordering them all over again. Chretien's behaviour was criminal. The Canadian voter is as much to blame for it by affirming Chretien so completely afterwards.

The 30 minute run dry requirement is for the gearbox/transmission AFAIK.

The S-92 got an exemption on the basis that its design made total lube loss highly unlikely.

Then it (total lube loss) happened to a S-92 off the east coast, only one survivor.

I agree that the cancellation was brutal, but let's be honest, most Canadians were sick of the PCs and Mulroney, especially after he brought in GST and did next to nothing to revive our dreadful economy.

Chretien's biggest promise - which he reneged on - was that he was going to get rid of the GST. That was one of the biggest reasons Canadians across the country voted Liberal in 1993. The helicopter contract was not a concern for most people.
