Maybe she offered to pay Clarke's expenses to see the winter Olympics?

Maybe she offered her sister a job on an Alberta health Board? :P

    To paraphrase Mr Churchill:
Now we've established what Christy Clark , we're merely bickering over the price.

The oil's gonna move whether we like it or not and it'll go by rail if they can't get it out by pipeline. I'd personally rather see it going through a new pipeline than an outdated and rickety railroad that hasn't been properly maintained since Mackenzie King was Prime Minister. But hey that's just me. :D

The only real issue I have is where it's shipped from on the coast. I'd rather they found a better place to ship from than one that requires, tugs, pilots, blind pilotage abilities and is enshrouded with shitty weather for a good part of the year, not to mention which is also 90 Km from open water.

So, hopefully some common sense will prevail but then again we're talking about politicians here so that's doubtful. Besides BC should be getting guarantees from the Federal and Alberta Gov't that they'll pay for any and all spills rather than allowing a company with Enbridge's record to "promise" they'll pay for any cleanup.

I would like to see the pipeline go, but I want whatever entity owns it put up enough money to deal with any spill, ie billions. And if govt has to pay, it should sue to get the money back by taking over ownership of the pipeline. Ie, you make a mess and don't clean it up properly and we take away your toy(s).

It'll be the most regulated and inspected pipeline in the history of North America so the danger isn't going to come from it. The problem will be when some drunk tanker captain heading for Kitimat sails into a reef, or some Malaysian-registered rustbucket comes apart at the seams while it's loading up at the terminal. That's where the disaster will happen because the regulatory regime governing foreign-registered ships entering Canadian waters is an absolute joke when compared to the one that governs and oversees pipelines.

I never disputed BC'ers rage against the pipeline and the Kitimat terminal. I mere tried to point out that their anger was misdirected and that the worst-possible scenario was going to come from the water-based part of the operation, not the land-based one.

Actually most of us here said the same thing. But the pipeline is he entity that supplies the ships, it has to take the hit if there's a problem on the water as well. Can't just dump your dilbit into a Malaysian rustbucket and wash your hands. Or make each ship put up billions in bonds - that's a good way to stop any tanker traffic whatsoever.

The pipeline should go to Prince Rupert, but even that won't mean there's no hazard of a marine spill. You want to use our territory, put up the bucks to guarantee you'll clean up your mess.

I agree, as long as you're talking about the oil companies. My only issue with BCs position on this whole thing all along has been Christy trying to get money out of Alberta. We don't own the pipelines so i see no reason for us to have to take a financial hit for them. The Oil companies probably have more cash than alberta does anyways.

The only ones who should be guaranteeing it are Enbridge and its customers. Alberta shouldn't be liable for the pipeline or the shipping anymore than BC should be liable for eastbound freight trains or anything else shipped from Vancouver across the country.

Otherwise, I largely agree. FTR, I think Prince Rupert would have a better choice for the terminal, but what do I know?

The smart move would be a new (strengthened older) law in BC allowing them to fine Enbridge a couple billion dollars if a tanker sinks in the Douglas Channel.
