Mr. Speaker, our American neighbours certainly see the benefit in the
Canadian Wheat Board to Canadian farmers, because 13 times they have gone to
the WTO and trade tribunals to complain that it is an unfair competitive
advantage.
Now our Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian
Wheat Board will do the Americans' dirty work for them.
My question is simple: what side is the minister on? Why is he standing up
for the American agrifood giants and not standing up for Canadian grain
producers, who benefit from the Canadian Wheat Board?
Time and again harper will stand up and say it's for farmer's freedom, and some farmers even buy into that. But it's a load of shit. Viterra, Cargill, the railways, are all going to be claiming a bigger chunk of the pie, while the farmer's share will shrink.
I don't know where the motivation for ending the monopoly comes from completely. I hope it's not just for beef producers (see my signature). But I KNOW it's not for farmers that use the board.

I could introduce you to quite a few who did not.
The farmers elect the board members.
Canada elects the federal government.
Farmers keep electing board members who support single desk and not due to a lack of options.
And the spots where you see grey in Sask you can fill them in blue too except Ralph's riding where he won by 800 votes - Regina Wascana (Urban).
So let me know who's voting for the Conservatives if the farmers are not.
My take is that the christian church going farm folk vote conservative because they have always done so.
So fuck em, the votes don't lie. Don't vote in a pro-buainess government and expect that your little monolopy will survive when there are Conservative vultures looking for a quick score.

How about beef producers (would love to see the wheat board gone), agri business or just bankers butchers and oil/gas workers?
You want to see a grain producer vote, look at any of the wheat board elections.
In Québec, the maple sugar and honey producers created their own Coop where membership is volontary.

Take a look at the population distributions in a rural riding, such as Peace River.
What influence is the city of cities [Peace River, population ~10,000) and Grand Prarie, Pop ~47,000) going to have on surrounding Farmers (population ~12,000).
If every Rural farmer voted NDP, it would make no difference if only 30% of the cities voted Conservative. (roughly) I'll be that is true of most Rural farming ridings.

Why couldn't the wheat farmers create their own private wheat board?
The wheat board is toast. It has no assets. The grain terminals, shipping ports etc that it uses to move wheat are all owned by the private companies it would have to compete against.
As soon as those companies are given the OK to buy from the farmers, any wheat board or variation of, is going to be squeezed out in short order.
The profit that the board used to return to farmers will now be sent to share holders and CEO's of these private companies.
