I'll have to look into this further, but I believe Vacouver's Downtown Eastside has a serious HIV problem that grows exponentially year after year. So I'd rather see them spend the mony on rehab centres instead and not give them a safe place to shoot up, or give them needles that they end up sharing anyways.

Yeah, I'm all for rehab centres and more counselors, why perpetuate the problem by providing more drugs to a drug addict?

If you actually read the article and/or understood the principle behind a safe-injection site you would have realized that all they do is provide clean needles and a clean area to shoot up in.
They aren't setting up a concession stand selling crack.

This is an old article, but a common solution in B.C., rather than solving the problem, they give out free drugs or the paraphernalia to use it.

Regardless, it comes back the my same question, drugs, paraphernalia, where is the money coming from to pay for these programs?? Taxpayers.
o.k. up side it "may" reduce AIDS and save Canadian's on medical costs. But I doubt it, very much.
I think the only solution is more rehab centers and trained professionals to deal with the problem.
Right now, safe injection sites are nothing but an expensive band-aid and not really dealing with the real underlying social problems.

That was a medical study examining ways to beat addiction. That is nowhere near what you seem to be impling.
This isn't a government dole project to help fund down on their luck addicts score some dope but a project designed to limit the spread of aids/hep by minimizing needle sharing.
Thats a responsible society in action.
What are you basing your opinions on, Tritium? It's certainly not actual research.
Let me get this straight though. You don't want safe injection sites because we as tax payers are funding them... but you think we should have more rehab centres with trained professionals... paid for by.... tax payers again?

There is a big difference between just supporting a habit and/or fixing the problem.
So you are saying just keep giving out free needles to drug addicts for the next 50 years. Safe injection sites need rental space and staff, same as rehab centers.
I am saying try to fix the problem as most drug addicts are on welfare, unemployed or commit crimes to feed their habbits.
I would rather spend tax dollars are fixing the addiction, trying to get the individual back into society, working, and of course paying taxes...
It's like a radiator hose with a leak, sure you can put duck tape on it, but later she's going to blow, you may be stranded on the side of the road, towing charges, time lost from work... whatever.
...or you can fix it right away, and get a few more good years out of your investment.

I think every single tax payer in the country can say that some portion of their tax dollars is going to something they despise.

Honestly...that would be pretty cool. I know it'd probably be impossible, but it'd be a good indicator on what the people want/demand/desire instead of a few dumbasses in Ottawa/Toronto/Quebec City/Victoria/Regina/etc pretending they know what the people want.
