In other words "let's try the old reverse psychology approach and see if they blink". Yeah. My guess is the prospect of NAFTA being revisited or even scrapped is higher than we think. From what I have read, MacNoughton is a very intelligent and competent person, it's unfortunate that the police in this country operate above government.

When you have the Canadian authorities entering American corporations and spreading interest in unions at these businesses and generally undermining their efforts, it doesn't exactly scream "capitalism". I love free trade and lowering barriers more thna most, but I also believe in individual rights and businesses freedoms to earn a profit without undo interference. I imagine the vast majority of Americans agree with me.

No wonder our allies don't trust us...

The thing is we don't need to re-negotiate anything.

If Trump pulls out of NAFTA for whatever reason - the old FTA agreement is still on the books and would kick in (unless Trump pulled out of that too).

You know as well as I do that he is ideologically driven by his love of America and "American First" attitude. This means he will do business with anyone and for most anything, but, he wants to "win". I understand that ideal, I am a strong believer in patriotism where it is warranted.

I would be surprised if he and his government don't put the squeeze on Canada and Mexico. We had better make sure we have some very smart, tough and informed negotiators because this next four years isn't going to be like the last 40. Also, if TPP is dead, Canada needs to start expanding individual free trade negotiation with countries like Japan and New Zealand. Let's not race to the bottom, let's climb higher.

Justine, go sit in the corner like a good little boy.
    Hopefully they don't see you.

Trump however said 'tear up' NAFTA. Not 'redo' or 'renegotiate'. I think Mr. Trudeau is offering a compromise that isn't going to be accepted.

    This.

It's to give the suggestion that "hey, no problem pal, we have some issues we need addressed too". A fair approach to negotiations as you want to ensure there are negative consequences to others when opening up discussions. Canada doesn't want it outright negated with the entire renegotiation of the entire agreement.

I do not believe it will be ripped up, but it will be reopened. America isn't opening up this trade deal in order to give more to Canada and Mexico so take that for what you will. I believe Trump will open it up to protect certain industries. We had better send some sharp and informed negotiators, not career politicians.

Oh, and Ontario will be punished the most when NAFTA is renegotiated. So whoever replaced Wynne will have a much smaller revenue source to work with, I imagine some heavy increases to property taxes in Toronto will ensue. Some cuts to the TPS and OPP will follow, so at least some of the elites who caused harm to our relationship with America will pay a price. They aren't alone unfortunately.
