Calgarians just can't leaf this one alone. The Twittersphere is mocking a group of Calgary residents who are barking over the city's decision to plant 15 trees in a local park.
Those residents sound barking mad. Don't want to cedar trees. They pine for the good old days when trees knew their place. Almost as bad as those TNBs moving into the neighborhood.
They planted some oak downtown. Maples wouldn't survive the winter, although it would be entertaining to watch people scurry as the maples explode in -40 temperatures in January.
Ellen Burgess is leading the campaign to stop the city's tree-planting efforts in the small nameless park in her neighbourhood.
"If you give people more places to hide, more naughty things will be done," she said.
She believes more trees will lead to more crime.
Is this woman freaking serious?!?! Her and her supporters are more than a few fries short of a Happy Meal if they need to protest trees being planted in a park.
I'm going to go out go out on a limb and say any crabapple who would go stump for this cause must be some kind of sap and is probably a total nut. The real root of the issue is whether the city should still spruce up the park or cancel a widely poplar program every time someone thinks they can bark an order. By planting more trees, future generations willow us a debt of gratitude.
You should hear the complaining going on here these days about an eminently logical and efficient bus-rapid transit system the city wants to build. "But it'll be near my house on the other side of a foot-thick sound barrier!". Calgary's not redneck-land anymore where people got along somehow and toughed things out. It's as much a yuppie/pussy NIMBY-ville as any other goddamn large city in this silly country is.
Calgary doesn't plant oaks or maples though. Just poplars that get into everyone's weeping tiles and crack their house foundations.
Trees don't kill people... roots, I'm not too sure about.
