The federal government will cover the medical expenses for dozens of former cadets injured in an accident where a grenade exploded during a training lesson in 1974, killing six teenaged boys.

Some kudos to the current government for addressing a case long overdue and which very few even knew about. The secrecy order was particularly disturbing, if not for the complaint to the ombudsman in 2013, this might never have seen the light of day.

The days of secrecy and free reign to abuse citizens is coming to an end in Canada, even if ever too slow...

Big fucking deal. Kids were killed on a military base and the survivors were likely traumatised so, paying for their medical bills is the very least the Gov't should be doing and is something they should have done right from the start. How about some proper compensation for the survivors and the families of the deceased.

Juneau Katsuya says talks about a financial settlement are ongoing, but he and several of the other former cadets have faith the government will finally get things right, 42 years later.
    ROTFL

42 years and myriad of gov'ts doesn't sound like anyone is real interested in properly compensating these kids for their pain and suffering. But, hey on the plus side the apology must be really comforting.

They deserve to be compensated and I would appreciate further details in the form of a book (Michel Juneau wrote a book as a former CSIS agent, i happen to own it) that exposes the players involved. 42 Years gone or 4 hours, we can't have free lunches for abuses of authority.

Quite easy to abuse authority and skirt accountability when youth are harmed, all in the name of what? It seems from reading this story and my own personal experience, far too many employees in positions of authority in Canada like them young...

I agree, but just as an aside, this was the 70's and it was pretty normal for government agencies to do so as they saw fit without much oversight. Things have changed now. It is sad it took this long to see the light of day however; at least it is being dealt with.
