Affordable housing wait lists in Ontario continue to grow, but those numbers no longer tell the full story, according to the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association.
Maybe instead of building windmills for billions, they should be building homes for people. Instead of stealing billions for pals they should give incentives for private development.
Maybe the tap needs to be shut off from the feds...
This is the predictable result of government intervention in the housing market. By mandating low income housing, development investors have taken their money and put it elsewhere.
You can't force investors to invest in low income housing. Not when a few taps on a keyboard puts their funds offshore where your government can't touch them.
Yep, makes perfect sense. If only the govt would stop forcing developers to build affordable housing, the developers would build more affordable housing.
I'm not actually aware of anywhere in Canada developers are forced to build any type of housing. They are sometimes given incentives to build more affordable housing, but nobody's hot a gun to their head. So you are absolutely right, Bart, you can't force investors to invest in affordable housing, which is why nobody has done so. Except in Bartland. Not a nice place to visit.
If the government is going to burn through $150B in 10 years and double the provincial debt to ensure Ontario is the most indebted sub borrower on the planet, they had better use it for the good of todays generation since they have risked the next generation. Building of roads, key infrastructure and yes, even low cost housing at a loss at least provides some social value.
High hydro rates, building of windmills, E-Health boondoggles and billion dollar gas plant cancellations are offensive actions that have shockingly resulted in very little consequence. She gave $500,000 to MLSE, the wealthiest sports ownership group in Canada. This so they could host the all-star game. How is this one time event advantageous to the province? This is a wealthy ownership group that was benefitting from hosting this game, and the province "gifts" them more? It's outright theft, in plain view, without shame. This is a drop in the bucket.
Canada has been riding the interventionalist ideology since our inception, in our long history of Eastern Bloc tactics no one has had a more horrible record than Wynne. People who aren't business people, simply stealing your money and giving it to someone else generally in failed endeavours. Its become so bad that our PM is going to other countries and suggesting that taking debt and spending is good for them...
The head of the TSA is called to the carpet today having a House Hearing to explain why there are long wait lines; his job is in jeopardy. Meanwhile billion dollar theft is shrugged upon by the OPP. The BoC just maintained our low interest rates yet again, there is no growth, no potential in this market and the worse is definitely yet to come when the housing bubbles in Vancouver and Toronto burst.
The situation now is that the late-stage millenials (born 1995 and after) are probably permanently locked out of the housing market as buyers and owners. Even with college educations the ones with better jobs are simply not going to be able to afford a home with a base price ten times higher (or more) than what their parents were able to buy in the 1980's.
Congratulations, greedheads. You just didn't slaughter a golden goose, you also permanently destroyed the basic dream of ownership for an entire generation, a dream that existed for centuries. "But why do why they hate us so much...", whine the preceding generations who got everything they wanted handed to them on a silver platter.
Ontario is the most indebted sub borrower on the planet,
Realize that most first-world countries don't even have sub-sovereign governments that can independently issue bonds or borrow money so this supposedly enormous statement really only compares Canada, the United States, Switzerland and Australia.
And then factor in that Ontario:
- Has 1/3rd of the population of Canada
- Is far bigger in size and has twice population than Switzerland (the GTA alone has more people)
- Has about 50% of the population and size of all of Australia
- Is larger in size than all US states and larger in population than all but 5 of those states
Also, note that Canadian provinces have far larger budgets and revenues per capita that states do because in the US much more spending and taxing is done at the Municipal and Federal level, e.g. Ontario and Quebec each have larger per capita budgets and tax revenues than California, despite California having a similar population to all of Canada.
And then realize this claim of "largest sub-sovereign borrower on the planet" is completely useless rhetoric.

It's all so fantastically irrelevant, you've outdone yourself today. The constant poor excuses offered up to defend the most corrupt government in Ontariowe's existence is almost laughable but is really just sad and pathetic.

As usual the Martin/2Cdo lovebirds show up to tag-team troll with empty insults.
In what way is that irrelevant? Bigger places have bigger budgets than smaller places. That's why New York City has a bigger budget than Flin Flon. Dummies.
But don't take my word for it: here's the right wing messiah Wall Street Journal:
...But comparing Ontario’s debt to California’s is like comparing apples to oranges, according to a spokeswoman for Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa.
“Ontario and California are not directly comparable. Canadian provinces are, in many ways, more like small sovereign nations than U.S. states,” said Susie Heath.
Ontario’s legislative structure provides it with more flexibility to manage its fiscal situation than California, she said.
Ms. Heath cites a report from bond rating firm Moody’s Investors Service in October that said rating California’s legal and political environment “creates obstacles to timely budget management and revenue raising, which restricts its freedom of action relative to other U.S. states and some sub-sovereigns, including Ontario.”
Moody’s also noted California has an unfunded pension liability of $120 billion, while Ontario had a surplus of $5.7 billion as at March 31, 2013.
It’s not just the provincial finance department that questions the validity of the comparison; some private-sector economists do, as well.
“It’s comparing apples and oranges, essentially,” said Derek Burleton, deputy chief economist at TD Bank.
“Canada is a very decentralized country, among the most in the [Organization for Economic Co?operation and Development]. Provinces have a lot of tax and spending powers that U.S. states don’t have,” he said.
Provinces also have spending responsibilities that aren’t commensurate with those of states, notably in health care.
“Most of the health funding in Canada is generated through provincial taxation, whereas in the States, there’s more split funding between the states and the federal governments,” Mr. Burleton said.
The Fraser Institute’s study acknowledges that “some might argue that this comparison is unfair, because Canadian provinces shoulder a larger share of government duties, vis-a- vis the federal government, than their U.S. state counterparts"...

Apparently they can and guess which Province is changing their laws to allow it.

Even if the currency exchange rate is factored in Ontario is worse per capita than California is, and that's with a smaller population as well.
