Alexander Van der Bellen is elected Austria's president, as Norbert Hofer narrowly fails in his bid to become the EU's first far-right head of state.

The term "far right" in Euro-Prog-media-speak appears to mean anti-open-border, pro-country.

They mean it as a slur, but it's turning into a compliment.

I read somewhere "President" is largely a ceremonial position in Austria. The fact the good guys almost won is the only thing that matters here.

If they continue to ignore the reasons why this candidate garnered so much support, then they truly are deluded fools who deserve any horrific events that may occur.

Already some in the FPO are shouting 'fixed'.

Postal votes are usually done by older, more conservative people.
It should have taken a Hofer lead after the count into a an easy Hofer victory.

'Record' number of postal ballots smells fishy, and places like Tower Hamlets in the UK are famous for being ballot box stuffers.

Something Republicans might want to take VERY seriously in November.

The lefties will pull out all the stops this time.

I expect the left won't have any limits or scruples in their desires to frustrate the will of the people.

    As usual.

Yes Martin, in fact I was just reading this one at Vlad Tepes blog from before the final votes were counted:

The FpO, the rough equivalent of Geert Wilders’ People’s Freedom Party, appears to have won the elections in Austria. that is, he took all but 2 of the regions marked in yellow on this map.

The problem is, now they count the postal ballots, which of course are designed for electoral fraud, and we know there is going to be lots of that. But in terms of the votes we can count, the Islam-critical party won by something close to 2%.

“Preliminary result of Austrian presidential vote, not including postal votes, shows far-right candidate Norbert Hofer on 51.9%, independent Alexander Van der Bellen on 48.1%, interior ministry says “

And if there's any "Far Leftists" nearby you can double-check those figures at your "Guardian" if you like.

Data from Austria’s interior ministry, which does not take into account the projected postal vote, put Hofer on 51.9% and Van der Bellen on 48.1%.

No, but Germany had a leader who did this.

Look forward to January 20, 2017. Wouldn't it be nice to have a President who actually likes this country.

They still feel contempt for the average American though....regardless of their party affiliation.
