Saskatoon could make gossiping in public, name-calling and shunning illegal

The proposed City of Saskatoon anti-bullying bylaw would also outlaw rumour mongering, taunting, mocking and ostracizing.

Hell, I was going to say I plan to shun Saskatchewan altogether (never going back to Regina after drinking the water there, that's for sure) until I realized that's where Grasslands National Park is - I'd like to see that.

It's at least a 3 hour drive from Saskatoon!

    But very interesting

Going by the list of what would be included in that bylaw (in particular gossiping, rumor mongering, ridiculing and shunning) it would never happen in some communities. Half the population would go broke fairly quickly. :|

I'm not sure how the law would even be enforceable in certain circumstances. While the police Sergeant quoted in the article likes it, he admits its drafted broadly and that could be its death-knell. One should be able to read a law and know what conduct is and is not allowed. Gossiping, exclusion and name-calling, among the other terms, are all pretty open to interpretation, unlike say, break and enter.

One can clearly appreciate how forcing entry into somebody else's home is a crime; there's no ambiguity about it. What happens if a girl turns down a boy to the prom? Is that exclusion?

I'm not pro-bullying, its a despicable practice, but its incredibly tough to legislate against, let alone define it without also running roughshod over the Charter.

I'd personally prefer laws like this aren't enacted and instead, the city council focuses on anti-bullying campaigns.

Welcome to Saskatoon. Where everyone has the legal right to never, ever feel bad about themselves. Unless you think poorly about another person and happen to share those thoughts with a like minded person... then you're a terrorist douchbag bully who deserves scorn and ridicule in the public square.

Oh shit. Wait. What if someone overhears the cop writing me my ticket for "thought crimes" as he explains to me why I'm getting the ticket? Well that's gossip that cop is spreading about me!!!! Ticket that mofo!

Political correctness is no longer just a softer form of tyranny.

    It's just tyranny.
