University of 'symbolic value' to Islamists Posted at 07:07
The Pashtun nationalist movement from which Bacha Khan university draws its name were opposed to the Afghan Islamist resistance against the Russians during the 1980s and also oppose the Taliban, notes the BBC's Ilyas Khan.
As such, an attack on the university holds symbolic value to Islamists.
"martin14" said I think that any university is better than a bunch of thugs with nothing resembling an education.
"Jin-Gitaxias" said Education makes every country better. The universities of the Middle East must be protected.
You mean like the University of Westminster, where Jihadi John went to school ? The University of Westminster is an ordinary university. Are you seriously arguing that universities create terrorists?
Arguing that Universities create terrorists is like arguing that down is up.

No, I am arguing against the tired old Liberal paternalistic idea that if we just educate the poor savages, they will become all normal and stop bombing us.

It seems the opposite is true.
Why won't that work? They are still human. If we can be educated and civil then they can be civilized.
Thats where you are wrong as stated many times by the forth club here, we are either blood thirst savages or some kind of sub humans that need to be eradicated.

I prefer to lean towards nurture. There is hope for the Middle East.

What an idiotic statement. The school didn't attack itself. It was attacked exactly by people who are against education. This lends some credene to Jin-Gitaxias idea.
It's about more than education tho. We need to stop playing various games of footsie with the rules that also want to keep their people ignorant, and let's just hope that Iraq has taught us the folly of thinking we can just impose our ideas on these people. Although by comments on this board among others, it sounds like some of our people aren't exactly fast learners either.
