Cool stuff! The future is coming!
A neat one I saw was a hydroelectric dam that worked both ways. It was in the side of a mountain, and it had an artificial lake above.
During peak periods, the water would flow from the mountain lake to a lower lake through the turbines, generating power. During off peak time, alternate energy would pump the water from the lower lake back uphill. Sort of a big 'green' battery.

I swear I've had that exact same idea for some time and thought it must not be feasible otherwise we'd have seen it by now! The only difference is that I didn't imagine a mountain but a Hoover dam type situation with man-made lakes above and below.

I do that all the time. Get a great idea like that, then find some Dean Kamen type already did it, 30 years ago in his garage with parts from the reuse-it store.
