Former prime minister Jean Chretien is adding his voice to the choir of calls for a long-overdue renovation of 24 Sussex, saying that the crumbling official residence makes Canada look like a “bunch of cheap guys.”

“I was there with my wife and we had to put in the bedroom an electric heater.
Just the typical Liberal sense of entitlement. Imagine your tax dollars going to buy an electric heater and pay for the electricity to run it.

If it's that bad why didn't he fix it. He lived in it for 10 years so, it's not like they didn't know.

Especially since Margaret Trudeau has apparently been bitching about it's condition for decades. ROTFL

Chretien should stop playing partisan politics. This issue came up in 06 so it's not new and yet he remained completely silent on the issue.

    Strange.

Hhy didn't he fix it? Probably because he didn't want to put up with the stupid complaints that are coming out now that Trudeau is fixing it.

Story from 2013 about how they would do minor repairs every summer when Harper went away but couldn't do anything extensive without him leaving.

Like I said in my very first post on the subject. It's all about optics and Chretien was a savvy enough politician to know that alot of people would see it as another excess which is why he and the other PM's didn't do it.

Does it need repair yes and should it be repaired? Probably but, the truth is that no matter who fixes it the whole issue is going to end up being perceived as a costly excess especially given the economy and what made this even worse for JT was that his mother opened her mouth about it which made it seem like she's the one making the call to repair it.

He was not silent in the least bit, he wrote about it extensively in his memoirs in 2010 pg 28 - 30.

That link lists work. It does require work, but how is this $10 million?

"Last year the heat and hydro bill for the drafty home hit $69000". Unfortunately they left out the part that went "Prior to the McGuinty/Wynne era the utility bill for the house was only $9000 a year".

You do realise he wrote those memoires in 2007, well after he was out of 24 Sussex Drive. So, my statement about being a savvy politician who kept his mouth shut because of optics, stands.

I'll pony up a buck if they promise not to build a granny suite.

Justin and Sophie have three children, the youngest born February 2014. Sophie gives public speeches. Who do you think takes care of the baby? The fact Margaret made a statement about their living conditions tells me she's probably happily babysitting her grandchildren when the parents are busy campaigning.

The residence consists of 34 rooms spread on four floors, including the basement. The latter consists of support rooms, while the main floor holds the dining room, living room, kitchen (which is staffed by a head chef and support staff), main stair hall, prime minister's library, and a sun room. The second floor is primarily bedrooms, including the master bedroom, as well as the office of prime minister's spouse. The third floor contains additional bedrooms and a private study for the prime minister.

A national post article says it's 10,850 square feet. Huffington Post and CanadaInfo says 12,000 square feet. I suppose that depends whether you count the basement or swimming pool.

I don't think they would need to build anything. She could just move in to one of the rooms.

Depends of the sense of entitlement of the new residents. If they truly believe they're owed more because of their status then this could turn into the new governments first boondoggle if the costs involved spiral out of control. No one in Alberta believed that Alison Redford would have destroyed her own government and reputation with the luxury apartment she demanded to be built for herself and her daughter but she was genuinely arrogant enough to do it. It can happen anywhere, with anyone, if they're aren't watched carefully. Give this one enough time and money and the opposition could be having a field day with this issue in a couple of years from now.
