As government agencies and tech companies develop more and more intrusive means of watching and influencing people, how can we live free lives?

    Unplug your computer.

    Throw away your cellphone.

    Stop your landline.

Cut up your credit, debit, store cards. Pay cash for everything.

Otherwise, you are just kidding yourself.

Actually . . your debit card doesn't leak information about you. The bank doesn't know what you bought, and the store doesn't know who bought it.

Unless you use one of those new 'Visa' branded Interac cards. They haven't published the protocols on those.

Walnuts, I wish I only got those. I bought a Jeep almost 2 years back and check out the Jeep forums a lot... every other ad is for Jeep sales. Mailbox gets weekly offers from dealers... like you buy a new car every week or so.
Worse, look what I rant about on this board - Harper and his Crime Bills. So every ad that's not for Jeep is a 'clear your criminal record'. I don't HAVE ONE!
This is my fear. The gov't will use the data collected in as mindless and arbitrary manner as the advertisers!

    True enough!

And since Windows 10 has started advertising on the 'Start' menu now, I guess that's another good reason to install Linux. ;)

God help us if they ever get it right! It used to be illegal for government departments to share data between them. When they start sharing everything, I can see Rev Can seeing "He won $20 from a friend from a bet that he didn't count as income!" Justice says, "That's proceeds of Crime! Seize his house!".
