Last week, the manufacturers in Solihull took last orders for one of the greatest and best-loved vehicles ever built, which will cease production in the next few months, writes MAX HASTINGS.

    How hard can it be to bring the engine up to modern pollution standards and take out those lateral rear seats? (Seems to me the 60`s LR I had had a proper forward facing back seat.). If they have good sales, this just makes no sense. OTOH, the Toyota and Nissan offerings are better anyway, and more reliable.

    By no stretch of the imagination is a Toyota Rustbucket or Nissan Mallfinder in any way better than a Defender. Like the article says, "It is estimated that three quarters of all Land Rovers ever built are still surging noisily across country somewhere."

    Whereas 3/4 of all Toyotas or Nissans that don't have a jihadi mobile gun placement in the back are happily rusting away somewhere. ;)
