Health Minister Rona Ambrose says she is "outraged" by the Supreme Court of Canada decision that expands the definition of medical marijuana beyond dried leaves, to include cannabis oils, teas, brownies and other forms of the drug.
In a unanimous decision Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled that users should not be restricted to only using the dried form of the drug. They said the current rules prevent people with a legitimate need for medical marijuana from choosing a method of ingestion that avoids the potential harms of smoking it.
But Ambrose says, despite recent court rulings in favour of the use of marijuana, her government maintains that cannabis has never been proven safe and effective as a medicine.
"Marijuana has never gone through the regulatory approval process at Health Canada, which requires rigorous safety reviews and clinical trials with scientific evidence," she told reporters in Ottawa.
"So frankly, I'm outraged by the Supreme Court."

Then, people would know exactly what they were getting, doctors could actually prescribe it and the results could be properly analyzed to ensure effectiveness, just like any other scheduled drug.

Unfortunately for you, the federal govt can't enforce laws, just make them. It's up to the provinces, and where cities have their own police force, basically up to the city.
You really want to have the govt go on some sort of war on Marijuana? What a waste of resources.

How can the pharmaceutical companies do research on an illegal substance. I guess the growers could, but that's serious coin that even the growers don't have. The govt would have to step up and pay for the research themselves - that won't happen.

We're talking Medical marijuana here not your home grown stoners crop, so it falls into that grey area where it's quasi legal since no one can be busted if they have a license which is the problem. Hell the simplest thing to do would be legalize medical marijuana and then get the pharmaceutical companies to do their testing. That way you could treat it just like any other scheduled drug which would go alongway to controlling public safety.
BTW I don't want a war on marijuana since we're already involved in one but what I do want is the medical marijuana industry regulated so it's not a wild west show with everyone doing what ever the fuck they want and claiming the moral high ground while doing it and if that means the Federal Gov't has take their head out of their ass and make the tough choices, so be it.
The only thing Rona Ambrose said that made sense today was that the Supreme Court of Canada has, without clear clinical evidence and contrary to Health Canada, now made themselves the sole arbitrator for what is being claimed to be a pharmacological drug something that goes right back to the fact that the fed's just won't think outside the box.
The last thing we need is some combo of all the worst of the tobacco industry combined with all the worst of big pharma and their lobbying. The medical thing and all the talk of 'scientific' approaches is all bullshit to stall the inevitable. There's 50 people for every one using it for medical reasons, and there'd be no real problem for the medical users at all.

The only thing Rona Ambrose said that made sense today was that the Supreme Court of Canada has, without clear clinical evidence and contrary to Health Canada, now made themselves the sole arbitrator for what is being claimed to be a pharmacological drug something that goes right back to the fact that the fed's just won't think outside the box.
Actually, the Supreme Court didn't make any decision with respect to the effacacy of pot for medical benefits. The Supreme Court said that people have the right to use it as a pain treatment, or for other medical uses. No different than all the 'holitic' bullshit out there. So the Government was forced to let people buy it, as a medicine, without making any judgement as to it's effectiveness.
What they said today was that if the Government has to regulate it as a medicine, then they can't also force people to only smoke it. Imagine making a child, who uses it to control epileptic seizures, smoke pot? A spoon of oil is so much easier for a kid to take.
So, once again Rona, the talking head, is wrong.
