Victoria Day: How its royal roots have changed

Despite its rich historical background and connection to the British monarchy, Victoria Day has become a time for Canadians to welcome the summer with a barbecue and some brewskis. Victoria herself doesn't get much thought these days.

"Even though it is Queen Victoria's birthday, there may be a large proportion of people in the province of Ontario who just don't care ? or it might even be perceived as negative," Barr suggests. "So that makes me think?that we just don't want to offend someone by using it."

    History is so offensive.

Why dump on Ontario for this? I guarantee that the situation is no better in the rest of Canada ... likely far worse in Quebec.

There is no Victoria Day in Québec... didn't you get the memo?

I've lived there for half of my life and we celebrated it in our "ethnic enclaves"

I thought it was named for Victoria's Secret... I mean it's the first day of the year we see women out and about without fucking parkas on

In my family Victoria Day is very solemn occasion. The portrait of Her Majesty that hangs on our wall is decorated and lit with candles. We stand around it for hours reading prayers and singing hymns. We also set a ceremonial place for Quen Vicky at the dinner table.

    /end sarcasm.

Truth is, everyone knows that its queen Vs birthday, they just don't care and neither do I.

It makes sense, the long haul from New Years to Easter was a tough slog. Not just because it was the longest stretch between holidays but also the most depressing time of year. Other provinces have a holiday in Feb also; infact I believe only the territories, QC and NB don't have a day in Feb. Now if only we can get something between thanksgiving and xmas!

    You mean, Remembrance Day? ;)

Only day of the year when I drink more than Victoria Day.

Remembrance Day isn't a day off here in Ontario - not even for bankers or public employees....just a regular day where they expect you take 2 minutes of silence and then get back to work.

I certainly should be. I don't know for sure but I think that it once was.

Well ok but be prepared. I was in Calgary on Remembrance Day last year and it seemed like Dr.C said....for many it seemed to be just another holiday long weekend. At least the structure of school and work forces people to take the moment of silence.
