Type 2 diabetics could benefit from a drug that's already on the market. Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a cough suppressant found in Vick's NyQuil Cold & Flu Relief, Triaminic Multi-Symptom Fever, Dimetapp Children's Multi-Symptom Cold & Flu, Tylenol Cold Mult

Lots of type 2s produce plenty of insulin....more than regular folk. It's the fact that they are insulin resistant that causes the problems. The high levels of insulin in the bloodstream is part of the reason type 2 diabetics find it hard to lose weight and often pack on the pork.

And then the poor little pancreas sputters and implodes because it runs out of energy to produce that insulin.

It would be awesome if a simple pill were able to get cells to accept that insulin again, in proportion to the levels of blood sugar. Hypoglycemia really, really sucks.

I had some hypoglycemic episodes when I went really low carb and didn't adjust my meds(including insulin) quickly enough. I remember standing in a 7-11 in Kaohsiung shaking and sweating, trying to rip open a juice box. Poor clerk likely thought, 'look another foreigner strung out on drugs.'
