B.C.'s left-lane hogs to face tougher rules, transportation minister promises

Good idea, should have been implemented long ago. But, from what I heard, the police still can't ticket somebody in the left lane if they are doing the speed limit. If that's true, there's not much point to this legislation. You shouldn't be driving in the left lane if the right lane is clear.

That said, in Metro Vancouver, on any multi lane highway, unless at night, both lanes are full. All the time, I'm in the left, moving with traffic, cars ahead of me, cars beside me, and I get some idiot that starts tailgating, thinking they can make me go faster or pull over. I slow down until they get the message. It's probably these numbnuts who call in to the radio raving about the left lane bandits everybody get out of may way, I'm spatial and I'm coming thru.

People hold up the autobahn as an example of good driving. I've only driven it in the summer, when holidays are on, and it's the same deal - the road is full, cars in both or all three lanes. You still get some ahole in coming up on your ass, flashing his high beams, as if I'm just going to crash into the cars on my right just to let him thru.

So, this law really only applies on highways that aren't that busy. So it's easy to pass on the right = not ideal, but not such a biggie. Beats tailgating the left lane hog, flashing your lights - he probably won't get it and it could turn into a road rage accident.

So you would just smash your way into the cars to your right, is what you're saying? Or smash into the cars in front to make them go faster? What about if I'm passing traffic on my right, have the car floored, but a more powerful car behind me wants to go even faster? I should never pass because faster cars may come along?

Install tracker behind the plate of every car. Then we can have a full realtime map to track who is on the left lane when other lanes are clear.

Or get divers to police themselves. Andy referenced Germany and how other drivers are up your ass if you're too slow in the left lane. That's a good system to emulate. I do it myself; if some knucklehead is doing 90 in the left lane, I flash my lights. And if it isn't an Asian woman driving it usually works.

I've always said that I don't give a shit what you're doing behind me. If you're tailgating me then you definitely deserve an excessive speeding ticket...
Noticed the photo they chose in the Sun was of a rural passing lane. WRONG!!! The problem with those is that they're too short and the dickhead who's done 85 for the last 50 klicks speeds up to 140 in the right lane, then jams on his brakes at the end and thinks he has the right of way to merge back in.
Its the guy in the left lane of a 4 lane road going 90 who won't pull over that the discussion is about.

I often encounter the same type of people on US Route 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. You get stuck behind some old tard who's driving 45mph in a 55mph zone and when you get to the passing lane he speeds up to try to keep you stuck behind him!

That's when it's nice to have a 400hp engine under the hood of my Volvo. They never see it coming!

There isn't a traffic rule that's been invented yet that's good enough to do anything about some of the retards that get drivers licences. Most of it's common sense and with any other specie wouldn't even require enforcement. Humans though? No matter what it is it's guaranteed that someone somewhere will automatically do the stupidest thing possible. Don't tailgate. Don't do ten under the limit in the passing lane. Leave the house fifteen minutes earlier to beat the traffic and not have to do lightspeed to get wherever the fuck it is you're going.

Too sensible though, and that alone is why too many dipshits are incapable of doing it the right way.

It's not a good system to emulate - the fact is speed kills people.

And your tactic just causes extra nervousness in the driver you're harassing.

Blame the writers and the network. Clarkson is just playing a role is all.

So long as people driving in the left lane at driving at the posted limited with respect to the road conditions they can't be violating any law because they are already traveling as fast as is legally possible.

No one could be held up by them because they are already going as fast as they can.

For people below the limit in good conditions I can see the police giving warnings.
