The Town of Loon Lake, Sask., which is generally responsible for emergency services in the area, said it didn't respond to a fire that killed two toddlers on Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation this week because of a contract dispute and unpaid bills.

A completely avoidable tragedy. But, at least the Loon Lake Fire Department was smart enough to release the letters showing that the payments were in arrears and that the agreement for fire services had lapsed otherwise it could well have turned into just another case of whitey done us wrong.

Unfortunately this whole scenario falls directly on the bands Leadership so, if the band members are pissed off at anyone it should be the people "they" elected to run their Reserve and not the Volunteer Fire Department from the town. I hope I'm wrong but my guess would be that the anger will remain for at least the foreseeable future and it'll be directed squarely against the white townspeople and the facts be damned.

"We've never even had a contract to begin with in the past," he said. "That's what I can't get my head around ... I'm actually going to go to the village office and see this contract. I was also going to go and make the payment for the amount owed. It had nothing to do with our finances. It was just to create better services for our First Nation."

Why does he say there's no contract and then allude to it buy saying it had nothing to do with money but was just to create better services for the band. Something's not right with that statement especially since he claims to know nothing about a contract and says the band always paid for the services "after" a fire.

Hey Chief, check to see who's running your band administration office because that's where I'd look first for this unknown contract. Especially, considering Villages and Fire Departments don't just don't initiate contracts with only one party involved and then be stupid enough to send out correspondence alluding to it.

There's a contract and someone in the band office knew about it and received the correspondence so the question becomes not why the FD didn't respond but why someone didn't the Bands overdue bills?

Chiefs blaming others for their mistakes and mismanagement? Shocking!

Greed and mismanagement killed those kids but the Chief will sleep fine believing it was lack of Fed money or the white man's fire departments fault.

Which would be relevant if I'd been the person who posted it. All I did was click on the picture in the top stories section and it took me to this link not yours.
