They've tried several times in the past to land the first (reusable) stage on a platform off the Florida coast, but it keeps falling over and blowing up. As Elon Musk said, it's pretty much not reusable after that.

But they didn't reuse them afterward. It is kind of ironic though, as the Space X Dragon rocket is the second version, or "V2".
