The generation that came of age in the past decade is “the world’s greatest social experiment” in terms of what unlimited access to pornography can do to the young brain
Porn isn't reality. A scene can be shot over several hours or days.
Since kids seem to be learning about sex from porn, this gives them some pretty unreasonable expectations. That, and a lot of porn is unnecessarily aggressive for an actor to maintain an erection.
The article is not surprising, as the saying goes; 'A light that burns twice as bright burns for half as long'.
Is the skewed perceptions brought upon by porn any different than the skewed perceptions brought upon by erotica/romance novels?
It is fantasy. Fantasy wouldn't exist without skewed perceptions.
Edit for shit disturbing:
The 'sex' industry is female driven. The erotica/romance end wouldn't exist as it is almost exclusively female purchased, and the porno/toy end exists primarily on the toy sales based on the actors and toys used in the pornos...also heavily weighted with female purchased.
Sorry, I'm getting kind of sick of articles talking about the 'sexualization of women' when the most 'in your face' sexualizations are from industries that only exist due to female spending.
I am equally as sick of hearing about how erectile dysfunction is somebody else's fault. ED can only happen to me through my own actions or the uncontrollable actions of my own body. If that is a problem, figure out yourself for corrections.

You're unclear here. are you saying porn primarily exists because of toy sales? I would need to see some solid evidence to buy into that.

The porno industry has been 'valued' at $14 billion based on a study that never actually took place.
Here is a Forbes article on it:
Forbes pegs the value between $2.6 - $3.9 billion...primarily male clients. (please note that this includes everything video/all paper/internet)
Erotica/romance novels value around $1.35-$1.5 billion...primarily female. (Please note that this does not include 'romance' novels, only erotica romance novels.)
Both of which are stunningly dwarfed by the toy industry...a whopping $15 billion...with an expected 30% per year growth rate.
Of the toy industry (approximates)... 19% are vibrators 16% are non electronic dildos 14% is lubricants 12% is anal beads 12% is penis rings 9% is rubber vagina/vagina like devices
Now, that may not mean that there is more females buying than males, it could just be that females are spending more money than males. But, the sex toy industry is heavily dominated by the sales of toys designed for women, and it is the primary revenue source for the legitimate sex industry.
So, yes the imagery based end of the sex industry is essentially the 'advertising end' of the toy portion of the industry.

Interesting. Doesn't mean that so much of hetero porn isn't degrading to women, if that was your point. Women aren't watching that and going I want that and have to buy a sex toy to do it. They're not watching it at all. Erotica is much different - some of the porn directed at women I've seen is actually much sexier than the slamma slamma slamma, sucka sucka sucka, bukkake bukkake bukkake crap that seems to be men's porn. I haven't watched porn for quite a while, but when i have I usually went for the lesbo stuff because it was a little more believable that the women were actually enjoying it.
My original point was that both sides fantasy material is unrealistic. Claiming that only men's is damaging is a farce. The ideals for men portrayed in women's erotica is just as skewed as the image of women portrayed in men's erotica.
We talk about this issue as if it is a male only issue. It is not. Until we openly accept that both ideals are BS, it will never be fixed. They are two sides of the same coin, and each sides portrayals reinforce piss poor realities on the other.
None of which changes the fact that the 'sex industry' is a female driven sport. Take away the toy market, and the remainder of the industry becomes a fringe element, just like it was before toys came to the forefront and filled their coffers.
Can't say I've watched much women's erotica, but my guess is that it doesn't degrade men the way so much of the male porn seems to do, especially recently. Saw a whole documentary about it, how it changed from actually trying to be artistic with the participants seeing themselves as actors, to just being about the money shot and rape and violence. Maybe the doc had an agenda, don't know, but as I say, male porn doesn't really seem to be about stimulating the woman, just the guy slamming away at her and the woman pretesting to orgasm. (with sound effects supplied by some 50 yo granny). As I say, that's why I don't really find it very erotic.
I think the other big problem is that young kids can now access this stuff. We had to make do with sears underwear catalogs and maybe a playboy (no beaver shots) if we were lucky, and had to supply our own imagination. Still lots of bullshit going around when I was young, that no means try harder, women want to be forced, etc, but much more innocent times, all and all. Then the hippie thing took off, I grew my hair, and waaaahooo.
the way that they look at themselves, maybe.
Must affect the girls, too...

it usually makes girls feel like the need to fake it make it seem like they are enjoying it

The women don't have a choice now and have to buy toys, since the guys all have porn-induced erectile dysfunction.
Touche!
