I don't see why shes confused. Regardless of pre-exsisting conditions her policy had expired a month before they went on the vacation and she went into labour. Before you travel make sure your insurance is up to date. Am I missing something here? I know some insurance companies allow you to renew without question within 3 months of exiring (ours does) however if we get sick or die during that period it won't pay out.
I'm not fan if insurance companies, they are all greasy low lifes, but this clearly seems to be her fault. $900K??!! Best bet, claim bankruptcy unless you have some rich family.
I read something different than you, I guess. Her water broke 2 days into their holiday, then she spent six weeks in bed on bed rest. Then her baby was born on December 10. She was on bed rest for 6 weeks already, so roughly, since November 1. Medevac couldn't bring her home to have her baby at home. What was she supposed to do? I assume she had forgotten about the date her policy expired, since she was not supposed to be on holidays anymore. She had talked to Blue Cross BECAUSE she was pregnant before she left.
"xerxes" said It's also another example of why not to travel when pregnant.
Hmmm, should one be sitting on their butt for 9 months then? Your employer expects you to come to work too... If my calculation is correct, she was 25 weeks pregnant when her water broke, 2 days into her holiday.
Also, apparently...
Tell the U.S. hospital "sorry, don't have it" and just move on. What are they gonna do? Mess up your credit in the USA? Americans without insurance get these insane bills all the time. We laugh (950,000 due NOW? all you can do is laugh...) and throw them away. Don't pay it. Don't try to pay it. And don't feel bad about not paying it. They can't do a thing to this family past giving them an "blemish" on their AMERICAN credit report. They aren't American, the report has no bearing on anything in Canada. So don't even worry about it. After 7 years they have to stop even trying to collect.
Lets see...you're preggers...and you have no insurance because it expired the month before you went on vacation...and you figure you should be covered in the US???? WTF lady are you dense?

It didn't expire before she went on vacation. You might want to do some math, sweetheart.

Read the bloody article. She had no travel insurance in Dec of 13 because hers expired in Nov of 13.

Your math skills kinda suck, don't they?
You better stay in your little shack in the hills you hillbilly since you think Dec/ 13 comes before Nov/ 13.

You really don't get it, do you? She went to Hawaii 6 weeks before her child was brought into this world, 9 weeks before he due date. Her insurance ended 3.5 weeks before her child was brought into this world, AND she tried to get home but wasn't allowed.
Now what part of this don't you get, you idiot? Your claim that she left Canada without insurance and expected the US to pay is... stupid, to say the least
(btw, those are not hills. Those are mountains. I guess you've never seen anything like it though. It's kind of special. )

Ok Brenda, Yup my bad, looks like you're right. Does complicate things then. No mention of if it was trip specific or part of some annual plan. If it was trip specific I doubt they would have renewed it while she was in hospital.
She may have had bad advice from her doctor but how many out of 10 doctors would advise her against it. I know my wife's discouraged her from flying in her last trimester, and she had no complications. Also if I put on my mean insurance company hat I know they almost never cover pre-existing conditions, which pregnancy is.

Lesson learned I guess.

I guess you just keep your insurance paid if you want to be a mom.
She only needed the insurance to travel. This is Canuckistan, she's covered for everything as long as she stays in her home province.
