I'm guessing, insecurity? I mean, Airborne beret, GG Bravery Medal AND a Pathfinder badge? This guy would be every Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzenegger movie hero in one package. Did he think no one would know a legend like that?

The fact that there were countless faults in his appearance lead me to believe that he wanted to be outed for whatever reason.

Could be. I'd think it's more likely that his disheveled appearance was because he simply didn't know any better. An NCO wearing a red sash appropriately might not be an easy thing to find out for an Internet Warrior.

But you are probably right. A person who wants to 'role play' being a soldier doesn't stand in front of CBC cameras for an interview.

HE's a nobody who wanted to be taken for a somebody. His getup was enough to fool the media, which is all that mattered. Probably even being outed satisfies this guy - there's not such thing as bad publicity.

That said, I've come across more than one person who undoubtedly served in the forces in some capacity, but all seemed to have been special forces, could take all of us out without breaking a sweat, etc, going on and on about what heroes they are. My guess is the guys who really are, don't talk about it, certainly don't brag about it.

Good guess. One gent who recently passed at the Legion was a Royal Marine, and even in his 80's I'm sure he could have snapped me in two. But he never spoke of it, it was just the way he carried himself.

I love running into those types of people. With just a few choice questions their story falls apart very quickly and the backtracking begins.

My mother had an uncle who was a paratrooper who was deployed June 5 1944 the night before the Normandy landings. He would NEVER discuss it and he made it real plain at one point that he didn't want to discuss it ever.

That's what i like about the WWII guys. They didn't talk about it, didn't dwell, just went on to create the greatest economic boom the world had ever seen. HIgh union membership, low income disparity, good life for everybody. Too many of the current crop of soldiers seem to see the need to carry it on their sleeves.

Sadly the WW2 generation spawned a generation of self-loathing leftists who were born into a hard-won prosperity and who hated their parents and their countries and their civilization for it.

My grand uncle who was on Juno, only spoke about his combat once. He was very, very intoxicated and he wept. This was one of my last memories of him, as he soon passed away from cancer. There is bravery in war, but there is no glory. Anyone who has been involved with it or dealt with its victims knows this.
