Netflix says it is refusing to turn over confidential subscriber information to Canada's broadcast regulator in order to safeguard private corporate information.
"DrCaleb" said Screw the CRTC and their Witch Hunt!
^^ That. And screw the CRTC for threatening to make Netflix illegal, therefore cutting off credit card payments inside Canada.
60% of Canadians now subscribe to Netflix, whereas many Canadians are dropping their TV cable. You can't legislate poor business models!
And the CRTC has no right nor use to the Netflix subscriber base. The CRTC has a hard on for trying to shove Canadian content down our throats, screwing with Netflix will inspire more people to illegally download what they want.
"BartSimpson" said So the CRTC is trying to use a clever ruse in order to implement government regulation of the internet.
I guarantee you that if this stands then a landlside of regulations will follow.
You can see where they want to go, just from one quote in that story.
After a short break, Blais returned and ordered Netflix to provide the data — along with information related to the Canadian content it creates or provides to subscribers — by the end of the day on Monday.
"Netflix's kind of late-1990s view of the internet as some unregulatable space was dragged into the 21st century and was put on notice," said Carleton University journalism professor Dwayne Winseck, who characterized Wright's appearance as "theatre."
"The CRTC has a Broadcasting Act to live up to and Netflix ... has to have a respectful conversation in that light."
It is unregulatable. If they try to maintain the Cable companies monopoly for them, as Brah says, people will just download what they want or use a proxy that makes it look like they are in the US, and screw regulation.
Interesting is I already host a number of Canadian subscribers for DISH Network from my PO Box. The bills come to a US address but the equipment resides in Canada and the CRTC can't do diddly f*ck about it.
Controlling the public's media intake is a thing of the past. There is just no possible way to regulate my ownership or ability to obtain a sting of 1's and 0's. That cat is out of the bag.
I don't want to sit through 40% crappy content just because it is Canadian. I am already more inclined to watch Canadian content because I can relate to it.
The truly ironic thing anymore is that so much US programming and entertainment is produced in Canada by Canadians...yet the CRTC doesn't consider any of that to be Canadian content.
I'll jump on the bandwagon telling CRTC to go fuck themselves. I ditched cable back in 2006 for many reasons, too much "canadian" content was one of them.

Why would they?
Just because you bag a Washington potato in BC doesn't make it Canadian.

What if it was a Washington potato grown in BC by born and raised BC potato farmers?

What if it was a Washington potato grown in BC by born and raised BC potato farmers? It would need a passport, dual citizenship and be charged 40% duty.
Fuck the CRTC it was only created so Canadian crap could get on the air. How many channels of French BS does a country need? How many make work programs to keep the FN on the air can we stomach? The CBC would be gone if we got rid of the CRTC I haven't subscribed to television since 2011 and all I watch is Hulu and US Netflix.

Fuck the CRTC for trying to control the message.
Want to get people watching more Canadian programs? Make them worth watching. Simple.
Ya serve shit, people are gonna go to a different buffet.
