The vast majority of First Nations chiefs and band councils have yet to post online their financial statements, including the salaries and expenses of their chiefs and councillors, under new transparency rules passed by the federal government last year.

And this'll make a difference, how? We know how much money George Bush or Paul Martin makes in a year and has it made them better people?

The Chiefs and Band Leaders will remain the rich living the good life while their constituents will remain the poor living in squalor.

Exactly. How many of their "subjects" have the ability to even look it up?
I don't imagine a lot of homes get internet in places like Attawapiskat, for example.

No. Nor does it include "Income Splitting" among the rest of their family.

Sad but true, I see that for myself and hear about how some are treated by their own people. It's terrible.

Considering that the article states only 20/600 have posted their salaries it could take a long time to get all of them to do so. In fact, I doubt that there will ever be a time when they all comply.

Compliance rates will increase exponentially once the cheques stop arriving, I suspect.

Would be nice, but I doubt anyone has the balls for that.

    Too bad.

Yeah, the Conservatives are the only ones that would push enforcemnet, and I can't see them stirring the pot with the Indians prior to an election.

Considering the FN does not support the Act introduced by the Cons to begin with it probably won't make a difference come election time if they did enforce it.

Watch for the deadline to submit the information get extended, then extended again...

Indian Affairs has been running as a quasi independent Gov't Dept for years so even if the current Gov't wanted to stop the payments the red tape would keep the tap open for decades.

Besides, the second anyone cut off the Chiefs and Band leaders primary source of income the hue and cries of racism would drown out all attempts at honest open discussion and reformation.

What I'd love to see is the whole sordid dept turned back over to the Indians with Chief Clarence Looie as Director for Life. Then you'd see come changes and the first one likely being that Indian Time would no longer be accepted as an excuse for absenteeism. ROTFL
