A tragedy that could have been completely avoided. I don't know why Malaysia Air would want to fly a route over a war zone, regardless of the altitude, when both sides were known to be in possession of SAMs. Would it really have cost that much more in fuel to plan a route around the Ukraine?

Most likely. From what I've read, the airspace is restricted up to 32000 ft. The airliner was flying at 33000 ft.

The question is now: who shot it down? You can't get that kind of height from a shoulder launched SAM but you can from a more high tech rig like the Russians and Ukrainians have. And if was the Russian controlled seperatists, then Pandora's box has just been broken open.

The rebels with Russian supplied missiles.

The mysterious leader of Ukrainian separatist rebels boasted of shooting down a Ukrainian military aircraft just before news broke that Malaysian Airlines MH17 crashed, according to reports.

An hour before news of the crash, Igor Strelkov reportedly wrote on Vkontakte, a popular Russian social media website, “In the district of Torez an An-26 was just shot down. It crashed somewhere near the Progress mine. We warned them not to fly in our skies.”

I see you already know the name of The mysterious leader of Ukrainian separatist rebels (who are actually Russian troops and everyone knows it).

If it was the rebels they probably didn't have the training to know what type of aircraft they were targeting.

From what it looks like the past few days, they've been shooting at anything flying.

The Russians are poorly trained, too.

Brenda, I'm so sorry I didn't say something sooner. My sincere condolences.

Looks like Bathhouse Barry was correct - there may well be a tragedy here.

It could also be the Ukrainian side who probably have poorly trained soldiers too and since all three sides apparently have access to weapon systems something like this was bound to happen.

    "Bloomberg News" said
Aviation authorities in several countries, including the FAA in the United States, had issued warnings not to fly over parts of Ukraine prior to Thursday's crash, but many airliners had continued to use the route because "it is a shorter route, which means less fuel and therefore less money," said aviation expert Norman Shanks.

Sad. Saving money on some fuel contributed to the deaths of these people. Doesn't seem such a bright idea now, does it?
