OTTAWA — Three months before Jennifer Bird knifed chef Simon Hubbard to death, a judge offered her a choice. Get off the drugs and alcohol, or end up being warehoused in jail. But like she had been doing since her early teens, she chose the booze an

On Thursday, the 30-year-old former prostitute was sentenced to 12 years in prison for manslaughter in the killing of a stranger who invited her over to his place for a beer after a night of New Year revelry.

Hubbard had been on his way home from a night of heavy drinking when he met Bird outside a ByWard Market shelter at 3:30 a.m. on Jan 1, 2011. The two took a cab back to Hubbard?s apartment.

Hubbard was severely intoxicated: Bird was at the tail end of a four-day crack binge.

Less than half an hour later, Hubbard would be bleeding to death after Bird stabbed him seven times with one of his own kitchen knives. The stabbing occurred after neighbours heard Hubbard loudly yelling at Bird to get out.

It?s the fourth time Bird has been convicted of stabbing someone.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Julianne Parfett said Bird?s crime was particularly brutal: Hubbard was stabbed in the face, head, chest, thigh and hand with one of his own kitchen knives. One of the wounds pierced his heart.

Hubbard also had defensive wounds on his arms from trying to deflect the attack, and the blade of the knife was bent after he apparently grabbed it.

Bird fled, telling no one of what happened.

    Dangerous offender status anyone?

Parfett said Bird grew up in a dysfunctional home with an alcoholic mother and mentally ill father. She started drinking at age 12 and doing drugs by 14. When she drank and used drugs, she became violent and unpredictable.

Parfett said her formative years left her with few of the skills necessary to become a productive member of society.

Maybe if she'd gotten the help she needed then, this would not have happened.

Maybe if one of the other 3 judges she stood in front of had some balls,

she wouldn't have been waking around doing crack and killing people in the first place.

So doing something long before she ever stabbed anybody no point to that? What sort of sentence should she have gotten for her first stabbing that would prevent her from doing it again? Life? Death penalty?

Her story, while tragic, doesn't change the fact that this one is a proven danger to society (this was her forth stabbing after all). She should be warehoused until she's deemed fit to live with the rest of us.

Probably. But how come people are eager to pay the costs for doing this, but not for programs that would prevent her stabbing anybody in the first place? The second way is cheaper and more protective of society at the same time.

Andy, just for once, try reading the article before shooting your mouth off
    with no information as usual.

Drinking at 12, drugs at 13, in court 3 months before she did this guy.

I'm sure she has lots of experience with the legal system, lots of experience with
judges letting her walk away while she whines ' the drugs made me do it '.

By 3 other stabbings, no way she should be walking around getting ready for number 4.

Now some poor shlub has to die before anyone stops this bitch.

Maybe you would clue in that I read the article by the fact that I posted a section of it. (Maybe not, not sure how bright you are). I'm not talking about judges being lenient. That does no good at all unless the leniency is backed by having the person in a program with the threat of jail if s/he doesn't follow thru. Hell, better to give her a longer sentence so she gets federal time that includes programs on addiction.

The intervention has to come much earlier, while she is a child, before she ever saw the inside of a courtroom. Alcoholic mother, mentally ill father - that family needed supports in place or she needed to be in a properly funded, caring foster home. That's still a lot cheaper than the 100k or more it costs to keep somebody in jail for a year. Never mind the cost of the dead victim.

I'm sure your awww poor girl let's throw money at her case had plenty of chances.

4 stabbings, it's a safe bet to throw in a dozen drug related cases, and maybe another
    half dozen prostitution raps.

Run through the whole system, all by your bleeding heart friends, and look at the result.

Bright ? I noticed you ran away from the "girls only get cut in Africa and not Islam "
thread once the truth started coming out.

    So sure.
    So confident.
    So wrong.

Maybe take a look what I wrote following your post about Indonesia etc.

Prostitution raps - it should be legal anyway. Possession of drugs - big deal. Was she dealing? Unlikely if she was hooking.

Try to read what I write instead of just making up your own crap. I said being lenient on her for the stabbings won't do any good. She has to be helped before she ever entered the justice system.

Ignored by society as a child - and look at the result.

Maybe she was offered said help and refused it because, as we all know, we can't force addicts or prostitutes into rehab since it would violate their Rights.

So trying to put this woman's propensity for violence and drug abuse on society and the system isn't exactly accurate. She knifed four people and got off 3 times which would indicate she didn't want any help for her "bad decisions".

She can now get the help she needs in prison where I hope she spends every day of that far to short 12 year sentence.

"Her past wasn’t an excuse, Parfett said.

Bird was an intelligent young woman capable of making changes to her life when given the opportunity, the judge said.

Instead, she squandered them by returning to a familiar pattern of substance abuse that frequently ended in violence and harm.

“This was her choice, and it was a bad one,” Parfett said."

From the points above found in the article it seems she had chances to change her life style of drinking and drugs but chose not to.

For fucks sake, what is wrong with you people. Can't you read? I'm talking about when she was a kid, growing up in that family. By the time she's an addict that battle is already on the way to being lost.

Her propensity for violence is accurately blamed on a society that lets her grow up in such a home, then wants to spend money to incarcerate her for years after she kills somebody instead. That money would have been much better spent at the front end.

Maybe she'll get some help in prison. And maybe she'll just get even harder by being in there, come out worse than she went in. Prisons don't focus on rehabilitation very much.
