Ford Motor Co., struggling with in- car technology flaws, will base the next-generation Sync system on BlackBerry Ltd.s QNX and no longer use Microsoft Corp.s Windows, according to people briefed on the matter.
Back around 1996 QNX had a downloadable OS demo. Boot from a FLOPPY, office program and web browser included. Their website said "If the Space Shuttle ran on Windows, would YOU fly in it?" They've made a pretty cool *nix variant over the years.

Most people don't know, but QNX was the operating system that Palm ran on the Palm Pilot. This version was destined for the newest Palm Pilot, before Palm fell flat on their face and BlackBerry bought them and snazzed up QNX in every way.
"Count_Lothian" said Actually i have a 2012 Ford edge and the sync sucks. I loathe the microchip label on my dashboard.
I've got an '09 F150 with the original version of Sync, and . . .it's OK. It syncronizes well with my BB Z30, and plays music off a USB key well enough. But 'high tech' it isn't. And no updates.

i asked if i could back track and they said impossible.
it plays music well through my usb and does everything , but it's glitchy at times. the voice commands are like a stoned out of your head siri.
i have not installed the third update.the guy at the dealership said if it is working okdon;t do it.
so i have issuesthat being said i love my Edge..I was a GM guy and went through four new vehicles since 99. i got used to the abuse at Goodwrench service. Ford is awesome and the service is the best
at Gm always under warrantysomething would go wrong and they always questioned me whyhassled me..tried to make like i did something wrong.. my classic answer in the end was All i did was buy your vehicle and use it.

It still exists in 30 day evaluation form. I played with it a bit, it's pretty neat.

Thank you for your interest in the QNX Software Development Platform, which includes the QNX Neutrino Realtime Operating System and the QNX Momentics Tool Suite.
I hope later when BlackBerry runs out of money, it will become opensource.
You'd think that the supposed security of their system would put Blackberry back on top in this day and age of constant monitoring of everybody.
Good for them!

It's the reason I ditched my iPhone. I'm digging the Q10.

they give you updates that are useless.
Everything microsoft is bullocks.
people have to go to school to learn how to keep it working.
billions of dollars are spent on keeping it safe in companies.
Apple is no where near as badthey admit when there is a problem and fix it.
no one has to have a degree to operate it.
it's insane
nothing in the world is this lousy.
my first puter was an ibm with windows 98 second edition.
it crashed the first weeki phoned in and wanted a whole new puter.
when they asked why i said cause it's broke the first weekthey said thats the software . i said so without the software it's a metal box with wires.
they refuse to give me a new one when ever it broke
so the following puter , an apple and i am happy as hell...
