The Defence Department was effectively stripped today of more than $3 billion it had planned to spend on major new military purchases in the near future, in what amounts to the second major setback it’s faced in as many weeks.

Apparently we won't know the full extent of the damage until June, but word is this effectively kills the Hornet replacement and will probably delay the hell out of the new ships for the RCN.

There's no doubt now, the ball has been dropped on the defence file. The Tories better hope having a balanced budget wins them the next election, they have nothing else to run on.

    Dropped?

Fuck man, it was set up and fucking punted by special teams and some shitiot in the end zone picked it up and is planning to sell it on fucking ebay!

Bring on the NDP...they at least lie to your fucking face!

You've gotta admit that the Conservatives are pretty adept at bullshit. They didn't say they cancelled the spending they just said that they'd delayed it 3 years. Well nobody can ever remember a delayed procurement budget being given back to the aggrieved party, so we shouldn't hold our breath on that one.

And then you have the civil service retirees paying more for their health care well that ain't gonna happen either since it has to be negotiated in the next contract so, it's just more window dressing from Flaherty to make them look good.

A zero budget for Canada that the Military is going to end up paying for.....again. Well at least they're true to form. When a Gov't, any Gov't it would appear are finished using and abusing their military it's have a nice fucking day but, we're gonna balance our budget on your back and promises be damned.

I'm really gonna have a tough time figuring out who to vote for next election since the other 2 parties are as bad if not worse so, a question. Is the Rhino running any candidates and if they aren't maybe the Libertarians are a better choice.

Well, we all knew it was coming, just a shame to see the predictions were true.

There's a demonstrable phenomenon where the CPC advocates Liberal policy anywhere from 18 months to a decade after we do.

    ROTFL

I did not imagine they would actually do this after spending the previous decade vilifying the Liberals for doing this.

Apparently our bad management actually is bad.

Its very disappointing that politics are being put ahead of the military..again.

We all know, that they want to balance the budgets come hell or high water in an election year.

They better allocate the surplus that is predicted to fund the military equipment purchases when this is said and done.

I am tired of this kind of BS, every party does it because god forbid, you can't fucken touch the 250 BILLION we throw away in health care costs each year.

Sounds strikingly familiar doesn't it? :P

I can remember a Liberal Party not that long ago doing the same type of thing, the only difference being is that instead of cutting 3 billion from military procurements they hacked 28 billion out of the Military, RCMP and UNDE pension fund and I'm pretty sure if the pantry hadn't already been picked clean we'd be seeing this Gov't do the same thing.

They're all the same, no matter how much lipstick you put on them.

I looks as if they've been using our servicemen as a prop. When you send them to war, don't forget the photo ops, eh?

This is where the Conservatives look so bad - the hypocrisy of it. Support the soldiers seem to mean send them to futile wars then fuck them when they come back.

I don't recall the Liberals wrapping themselves in the flag and using soldiers in the same way, and certainly the NDP wouldn't do it.

Country needs a new CKA party?

SOP for the Liberals during the Chretien years was hacking and slashing the defence budget while at the same time increasing their operational tempo.

It was the Liberals who sent out troops into Afghanistan. For decades they offered up our soldiers in blue Berets and put them into impossible situations with ridiculous (or perhaps non-existent) rules of engagement to "keep a peace" that never existed. The blue beret bit made the government look good but it lead to some dismal failures that really hurt the army (see: Somalia, Rwanda, Cyprus).

Maybe, that is why the "peacekeeper" phase of our history has come to an end.
