I feel bad for his legacy. When well known folk die before their time the manner of their passing is one of the things that sticks with people. Elvis died on the toilet, Cobain shot himself in the head, Paul Walker died in a car crash, and Hoffman died with a heroin needle jammed in his arm.
Not what I'd want my final act to be in this world. Terrible tragedy.

I saw that guys name earlier and looked up his pic. He looks vaguely familiar but I would have not matched the face with the name for the Million Dollar prize.
As a PS; I rarely watch TV or general movies so unless I come across supposed' famous people' via some other means chances are I don't know who they are.
"andyt" said Just another junkie - deserves to RIP as much as the ones on the street.
Or, for the hardasses out there, he should have been put in jail forever or shot - isn't the the offered solution for junkies?
Bit of a difference. If the junkies on the street had brought people that much entertainment, I'm sure they'd be eulogized to. But until junkie watching becomes a new form of entertainment I doubt we'll ever here about the ones that kill themselves by overdosing.
Must be because people like Hoffman and Belushi didn't rob and steal to support his habit that makes people a little more tolerant of junkies that are famous.

But either way, they all did it to themselves and it doesn't matter if you're rich and famous or living in Vancouver's East End, they all end up in the same place.

No one has said junkies should be shot, as for being in jail you can look at it from the point of view that he would still be alive.
You advocate for treatment, this guy had enough money to go to a rehab but did not. As I stated in a previous thread in cases like this it is only when the person truly wants to get clean will he or she respond to treatment.
Seeing as how he did not seek treatment nor was he cought by police buying or using there is no one to blame for the death but on the man his self. May he RIP.
He went to detox last year after relapsing from a 23 year break from drugs. Not saying it wasn't his fault, but he did seek treatment.
The actor told TMZ in 2013 that what had begun as a prescription pill habit quickly escalated to snorting heroin, and so he checked himself into a detox facility to get the issue under control.

Now with this new info I can say that your stance, AndyT, that treatment would have cured him falls flat. He did seek treetment and it failed or he relapsed again in a major way.
If there is any kind of a bright side, I read that the filming for the next 2 installations of the hunger games series are 95% complete and he held major roles in both of them. I thought he was an amazing actor, who took on some very interesting roles and look forward to seeing them.
It's too bad he died when he did, I really thought he was just coming into his own as an actor and had a lot more to offer.

Nice. Using someone's corpse to get in a cheap shot at somebody else. I imagine you're envious because this guy spent more on heroin than you'll earn this year?

Huh? What are you trying to say here? Surely not that treatment never works? Not sure what point you're trying to make. My point was that people will get down on junkies, but if he's famous all of a sudden they have sympathy.
No I'm saying and have said the opposit that treatment does work but a lot depends on the persons wanting to trully get off the drugs. Your whole stance has been treatment, treatment and more treatment even if the user does not want it. No jail time for the crimes they have commited just treat them or make it legal.
As for sympathy he is getting as much as any other famous person gets when they die a tragic death. The junkie on the street get little because few people know them. This does not invalidate that both the street junkie and the famous junkie are doing harm to themselfs and in many cases to others.
Not what I'd want my final act to be in this world. Terrible tragedy.
Still, he was damned good actor and will be sorely missed. RIP.
