This sounds like a corollary of the old "glass half empty" people are actually realists and the "every cloud has a silver lining" types and deluded dreamers.
There is often danger about but only someone who is a tad pessimistic would consider the situation to be dangerous.

I'm reminded of the old Barney Miller TV show when Harris, during the "Roots" craze decides to have his genealogy researched. They didn't get him back to Africa but they did get him back to Scotland.
