If defending yourself in Canada, do not proceed to call the RCMP.

Well at least they didn't shoot him nine times.

Pretty sad state of affairs when a citizen who defends themselves from a criminal has to turn around and defend themselves from the police and prosecutors who think that criminals should be able to ply their trade without citizen interference.

Bear spray, brass knuckles, long knives, and practically every other form of melee self-defense are banned from civilian use and ownership in Canada...

Meanwhile the RCMP electrocute Polish tourists at the airport. Mhmm.

Thanks weapons laws. Keep being retarded.
Jacob Scott Collins, 26, is charged with robbery and breach of probation. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Thanks courts for letting this guy go free before his time was done.

Where did you draw that from? Doesn't say anything about him having been in, nor gotten out early, in the article.

Sounds like two assholes each breaking the law got caught and charged. Where's the problem?

Charges should never be laid in non-lethal self-defense when the attacker sustains no permanent injury. The knife might indicate the guy's got some other issues but it wasn't used so it should be non-relevant. Hopefully this one gets tossed out of court when it gets there.

What if the guy was raping a 10 year-old when the robber came along then defended himself? Do we give him a pass? Same difference. Two shitbags breaking the law, each deserving a trip to con college. It's karma that they ran into each other.

"From what witnesses said it looked like he used excessive force," said Const. Keith Calderwood. "There's people saying his life wasn't in danger anymore. It's not like he sprayed and then ran right away. He sprayed, and just kept spraying, and then ran."

    Probation.

"Probation in criminal law is a period of supervision over an offender, ordered by a court in the stead of serving time in prison."

A judge desided that rather than have him in jail, he should be free but has to promise not to commit any crimes. Gee I wonder if that will work.

Your definition of probation is poor. Probation is a period of supervision, but not necessarily instead of jailtime. It's a sentence in and of itself.

You said "he was let go before his time was done". Incorrect. He wasn't let out early on probation, he was sentenced to probation. How do you know that a judge made that determination? Maybe jailtime wasn't an option for the offence he committed.
