The new federal justice minister says the Conservative government is considering changes to impaired driving legislation in the Criminal Code. But Peter MacKay, who only took over the portfolio earlier this month, wouldn't say exactly what is being ponder

Here's hoping for some mandatory minimums, and stronger penalties.

Throw in much stiffer penalties for the idiots using their cellphones as well please.

Drinking and driving 0 tolerance. One drink you are over the limit. You are caught drinking and driving the car you are in is sold and profits go to schools...... Same should be for being caught driving if you are on drugs.

0 Tolerance?

So if you had a drink sometime in the last week if you are caught driving, the car gets sold?

I'd rather have a non zero limit that is at a point of stastically important impairment. Not the limit of our abillity to test.

Tough on crime is obviously working since 2006...unless your name is Mac Harb.

I don't know about tough on crime but the court systems typically are not tough on drunk drivers - especially those that kill someone. If an impaired driver gets four years for killing someone, that seems to be on the high side of sentences and then they're out within 1.5 - 2 years anyways. That seems woefully inadequate for taking a life or lives.

As for dropping crime rates, according to Stats Can, impaired driving rates are actually on the rise.

According to data from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) survey, police reported 90,277 impaired driving incidents in Canada in 2011, about 3,000 more than in 2010 (Table 1). The rate of 262 incidents per 100,000 population was 2% higher than in 2010, the fourth increase in the last five years.
