Hopefully he recovers, although its obvious his health is failing, but he's achieved a great deal in his long life.

And sadly at 94, almost anything will put him in the hospital.

He'll be remembered as the brief shining period in RSA's post apartheid era, when they actually had a chance to be better than just another Zimbabwe. Every year more whites and educated and affluent blacks are leaving the place

I'm not sure creating a state where a woman gets violently raped every couple of minutes is much of an accomplishment. From one of the most successful countries in the southern hemisphere to one of the worst in the span of twenty years? Yes, thank you very much, Peter Gabriel and Steven Van Zandt.

Hard to prevent rape on a continent where many believe that having sex with a virgin cures illnesses. Have to educate the masses before you can fight culture based crimes, the apartheid rules didn't exactly excel at setting the country up for the next people in charge.

There was a a fairly affluent, yet disenfranchised, black middle class in the RSA during the Apartheid Era. They were educated, and running the townships. The problem in RSA is the ANC is turning into ZANU/ZAFU, and all the lazy, opportunistic miscreants are running the show now. RSA will follow Rhodesia, going from extremely prosperous to a basket case shit hole

Is there even a single post-colonial success story in sub-Saharan Africa? Between the AIDS epidemic and the tribalist Marxist kleptocracies everywhere they all of them seem to be variations of the same basket case ranging from the high end of the scale at "merely crappy" to the low end or "murderous, abyssmal, and utterly hellish". South Africa was the exception under apartheid but, oh yeah, racism blah-blah-blah. The "they need time to learn" or "blame the colonialists" excuse really doesn't cut it anymore.

sort of like the Japanese co prosperity BS....being enslaved by a local is infinitely preferable to being exploited by whitey. Let's wait for Ice_pigeon to do a flyby and drop one of his racist bombs. That is, if he isn't gorging himself at Sam and Ella's Dumpster Diner

    No.

I met a very nice couple from South Africa, moved to Switzerland.
Lots of them on the move now.
They still hold some farmland out in the country, but they rarely even visit it
anymore, just waiting for 'land redistribution' to start, then South Africa
will fulfill it's destiny as the new Zimbabwe. Fucking shame.

At least the last white gov't was smart enough to get rid of the nukes
    before losing power.
    All thanks to the terrorist.

While I feel bad for Mr. Mandela I am disgusted by the whole 'Nelson Mandela Death Watch' that's going on the media. It's rather ghoulish.

It's reminiscent of when the media vultures were circling Francisco Franco waiting for him to die and Saturday Night Live lampooned them with parody updates in the weeks after Franco passed...

In other news, Francisco Franco is still dead but doctors report his condition is stable.

True that. But then again, different situations. Mandela is a hero to millions of people. Franco was a fascist pig who lived too long.
