Actor James Gandolfini, best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of a conflicted New Jersey mob boss in the acclaimed HBO cable television series The Sopranos, has died while vacationing in Rome, the network said on Wednesday.
Best TV show ever. The kids bought Mrs. Lemmy the DVD set for Christmas last year. I also loved his performances in Get Shorty and The Last Castle, among others.
Sad, excellent actor. I loved and hated his character at the same time. It always mixed emotions of what a slime ball, and poor guy.
My sisters friend met James in Miami, he was really a personable guy, very big guy. He talked with her for about 10 minutes, it was about the fourth season of the Sopranos so it had taken off. She had no tv, didn't watch it and had no idea who he was. They got around to talking about what they did, she told him she raised horses and he said he was an actor. When she asked if he did anything she would know, he said he played on the Sopranos.
She said oh yeah, I've heard of it. Like the Godfather ?
Apparently he just smiled and said, yeah like the godfather.
Apparently he was amused and happy by that fact that she didn't know who he was.
Her friend later came up and explained to her who he was.
Sounds like a great guy. I remember him in a Robert Redford movie playing a corrupt general and he did a great job. Sad to say, but aside from what Thanos posted above I've never seen anything of the Sopranos. My loss, it seems.
The Sopranos got you rooting for the mob and then bang have them do something to make you go ohhh right they ARE the bad guys then slowly bring you back to rooting for them. It was a very well done show.
I was living overseas when Sopranos came out, so I never really got into it (helped me avoid getting hooked on reality TV too thank god ), although I did watch some of it later on when CTV played a few years later.
Now there won't be a movie... unless it's about AJ avenging his father...

...or the Hunter Scangarelo gang-bang.
RIP

Don't think I'd pay to see that one.

Rip Mr. Gandolfini.
