But then the bad mens will do evil things to them, and they won't have time to get to music lessons and soccer practice and arranged play dates etc etc etc.

Yup, I don't remember ever getting a car ride to school... or pretty much anywhere else for that matter. Never got to take the school bus either but I did take the city buses 3 years in Montreal... English schools were farther away than the French ones.

Kids are lazy today, true... but whose fault is that?

Between the spread out way we build our cities now and the paranoia about letting our kids out of our sight for 2 minutes this isn't at all surprising.

We walked everywhere. To to to the beach was 6 miles one way. When we spent our strawberry picking money as soon as we got it, didn't save busfare, it was 12 miles to walk back home. So even in the city, you can rack up lots of walking distance if that's what you're used to. Nobody ever got driven to school.

I rode the bus, rode a bike or got a ride with my mom or dad, until Grade 12

I just for the hell of it googled my old paper route.

    7.2 km, 6 days a week.

    Summer, bike. Winter, hitch. :D

I went to a fancy private school in Winnipeg for a few years. They had a school bus to pick you up and drop you off. But when I said I lived in the North End they said "We don't drive to that part of town." ha ha ha

I'd rather deal with black bears scrounging for fish and berries

Yup... but in their defense, in this PC crazy world, you're not only a bad parent but you're actually putting your child in danger if you say no to the little darlings and don't drive them around everywhere.
