A sailor in the Royal Canadian Navy says she's fighting two battles right now — one against breast cancer and another against the navy — over a disputed sick day last year.

    Stay classy, Canada!

You'd think that some senior officer would have the sense to drop this case. But instead it would appear that the brass has an acute rectal-cranial inversion going on.

Far better to prove some point than to not make the RCN and Canada, by extension, look like idiots.

Looks like someone really doesn't like this woman, I can't think of any other reason why they would continue with the charges.

Unless we aren't being told the entire story but only her version. 8O

What do you learn one the first day of basic training? How to call in sick; By going to the base hospital and waiting around half the morning until someone signs some papers saying you are sick.

This sailor knew how to do things properly, she was even given a second chance to do things the right way and report in. Unless it normally took her 2 hours to get to work she was fucking the dog that morning and should face charges.

There's better ways to handle this than to make a branch look pathetically petty.

Drop the charges and then station her in an automated lighthouse somewhere or perhaps station her in a new, Artic 'listening post' where she can listen to the snow fall and the ice melt.

    But this?

In the US I often think the only reason we still keep Thule AFB active is because it's a perfect place to station people for what really amounts to a non-judicial punishment detail. Seems to me you folks need to ask to keep a joint garrison there.

In all likelyhood she was having an emotional breakdown over the news that she had breast cancer.

Even if she wasn't, that's what she will say in her defense.

DND sure is good at confirming their assholishness. Kick her out and cut her benefits too while you're at it, jerk-offs.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with that bloody department? :?

Well first off, as it's a story from the CBC we are most likely not getting the entire story. Secondly, she chose Courts Martial, not DND, so she obviously has something to say. If she hadn't gone this route, the charges would have gone before her CO and he probably would've slapped her on the wrist or stayed the charge. Also, if she was told to go straight to the base hospital, she has probably abused the privilege of calling in sick before, and why would it take her 2 hours to get to the hospital? Halifax is not that big. It's a sad story about the cancer, but I think she may have brought the Absent Without Authority charge on herself.

It's CBC's fault, unless they break stories about Senator Duffy dontchaknow? Then they are good. And not mentioned.

    I'd +5 you, but it's too soon. :(

Why did they start chemo so late??

AND, why can't court take chemo into consideration? I doubt she will be well enough to attend her own court martial.
