Second source of revenue, analogous to the flexible pay walls that some newspapers and magazines have adopted

Let them do it. A competing free service will pop up almost immediately.

OTOH, now that I think about it...if you could just pay a monthly You Tube subscription for each show you watch, say $4.99 to watch this season of Walking Dead commercial-free, another $4.99 for Game of Thrones, etc. your monthly bill would be probably be less than what you currently pay for cable. They might even offer bundled packages....10 shows this season for $39.99! I sure as hell don't follow 10 tv shows.

But I would miss the channel-flipping surf-ability of cable.

I don't miss the Globe and Mail so I'm certainly not going to miss Youtube.

G&M gives you ten or twenty free articles but then they zap you with the paywall. The SUN does the same with their shitty SUN+ system. There are easy ways around it, with Chrome anyway, but I don't want to say it out loud in case it tips them off.

I get zapped by SUN every time I use my phone (no big loss), but so far, no problem with G&M on Firefox.
