I think the NHL blew this call, all the way from the on ice officials to Brendan Shanahan. At the very most Gryba should have received a 5 minute major for an unintentional hit to the head. Everything else was a knee jerk reaction to the injury and all the blood on the ice.

Not according to referee Lemmy.

BTW I agree 100% with you. I'm just surprised the police haven't tried to arrest him for attempted murder.

I didn't make the rules, 2Cdo. But it does make me shake my head at how many supposedly knowledgable hockey fans don't know/understand the rules of the game. Interference is contact with a player without the puck and it's a penalty. Any penalty that results in injury is a major. In every league other than the NHL, every major penalty comes with an automatic minimum one game suspension. It's not open for interpretation. The officials got this one spot on.

Either that's a road apple or it's the puck on his stick.

Agree, but Eller had the puck, albeit for just the merest of time.

Any penalty that results in injury is a major.

But it wasn't considered a penalty by anyone other than Lemmy, the ref at the game and Habs fans. The ref blew it on this and also the non call against Prust for the high stick to Andersons throat.

Like I said before, I'm some glad most refs aren't as blind and unbending as you. The league will be some boring without any hitting.

But Lemmy is a ref and he knows all. You know who becomes a ref? Those who can't play!

No head contact and it wouldnt have even been a minor. Dude will never be looking the wrong way going across the blue line ever again.

To be honest. I'm a Hab's fan and I felt the NHL blew the call to but, then again Shanahan took a lot of hits to the head when he was playing which may have made his reality somewhat different from most other people. :D

Maybe it's an overreaction by the NHL or maybe they felt he could have pulled up but either way Eller's injury could have been avoided by not sending him a blind pass through the middle.

I just hope he's okay and comes back as good as new because hits like this can ruin a career.

But for a comparison of hits take a look at the great Scott Stevens top 5 hits and see how Gryba's compares. IMO #5 looks like a replay of the Gryba hit.

And, as Don Cherry will correctly point out again soon, most of these injuries wouldn't be as severe as they are if the players weren't wearing that plastic plate armour that replaced the old-style cloth-and-padding elbow and shoulder pads.

2 games out for actually playing hockey? Play off hockey at that you know good hockey. I hope they appeal and win other wise I feel "pussification" of hockey will take place. I do hope Eller makes a full recovery.

Actually he has a point. Those nice heavy pads were not only softer but weighed enough that it slowed the game down to a reasonable speed. If you tried to do a couple of minute shift with the old leather pads on by the end of it you'd look like a hundred year old hooker trying for reach around.

Lemmy refs minor hockey. Nuf said.

    The suspension was reactionary.
