Target Canada president Tony Fisher addressed Tuesday the sticker shock gripping some consumers who expected the retailer’s prices would be on par with its U.S. stores when it opened outlets across the country this month.

Did anyone really think it would be any different?

Target wants to do what most other retailers have been getting away with for the past few years.

So sick and tired of retailers ripping us off. Still we always have the option of going to a Canadian store. Personally I don't think I'll be shopping target until they start treating their employees like actual human beings.

I thought Target was a step above, say Walmart, in how they treat their employees. This is just based on what I've read, not having actually talked to employees of either business mind you.

While you continue to accuse the retailers of ripping us off, the gov't just increased tarriffs and duties on a bunch of stuff that is duty free in the USA.
But hell let's go all the way. Shut down those Canadian wholesalers and retail distribution centers and ship duty free direct from the USA. We can afford a couple hundred thousand more unemployed if it means we can buy offshore shit for $1 less.

Why should the cost of shopping at Target in Canada be the same as in the US? The taxes and overall cost of doing business is much higher in Canada.

That position has been debunked for quite some time. Higher taxes, etc can only count for a portion of the higher Canadian price, not all of it.

What's the best way to get better prices? Competition. Let's not be too hard on Target. Opening Target stores will help consumers get lower prices in Canada, even if prices are a little higher than at Targets in the USA.

Companies aren't obligated to sell us stuff at the prices we want.

Like Lemmy said, it's mostly competition that determines the price and how much we're willing to pay for what they're selling. Don't like it, don't buy there.

I don't get why people thought goods at Target here would cost the same as in the US. I mean is it this way for any other chain we share with the us? Heck Wal-Mart has different prices on goods from one store in Winnipeg to another even.

. Last year, a BMO study estimated Canadian retail prices are roughly 14% higher than in the U.S.

14% would be acceptable, but the reality is much higher.

Everything I bought in the US over the last two years was at least 30% more in Canada.

Operating costs in Canada aren't the same as they are in the US so why would the prices match?

I don't know why this comes as a surprise - Wal-Mart's prices here have never matched their prices south of the border. It's a different market with different geogrpahy, population density, underlying costs and fundamentals.

I never expected Target to be as cheap as it is in the US, just to be competitive with Wal-Mart and other big box stores here in Canada.

Target in Prince George opens in May, I'll be there to check it out. Tall cut shirts would be nice. Human size shoes too.
Every other place, every sale you have a huge selection of Men's Small sizes and all the Size 8 workboots you desire. (Is that why they need to bring in miners from China?)

    This was interesting;

I wonder how accurate it is.
