Umm, I smell fish to this one sided story. Based alone on what he said neither CBSA or US customs would have questioned him like this based on just what he told them. Nevermind "having" to give over FB and Twitter passwords. First of all he would never HAVE to. Having worked in the field for awhile they certainly had something on him. He was flagged for something and he knows it. Just does not want to spill that part to the news.

Always easy to lie about your side of a story when dealing with the government because they can never say anything without breaking the privacy act.

BOO HOO sucks to be you.

Looks like someone is hoping Murdoch Mysteries will start casting for a new recurring character.

I've always found the border to be a small strip of fascist police state right between 2 democracies. Whether you get to pass through unmolested, or get turned back or banned sometimes seems like it has more to do with whether or not the border guard dealing with you has had a bad day, or dislikes your haircut.

I went through a three hour interrogation last year on March 1. US Border and Customs can be complete assholes. After an hour of being hassled over what was an oversight, I spent another two being asked if I was apart of some vehicle smuggling ring and forging stamps.

Thankfully I wasn't banned, and I believe the lawyer we hired to remove me on the watchlist succeeded.

Ughh, they SUCK. I always get nervous, because they ask the dumbest shit.

A girl from here has a bf on the other side of the border. She lives 20 minutes from the border in Canada, he 30 minutes from the border in the US. She was going to Spokane to the airport, to board a plane to Florida to get on a cruise. With her boy friend. She was not let in because they figured she would not come back but stay with him. The 2 had been dating like that for over 2 years, she has a job in Canada and a child in school. They had NO reason to think she would not come back to Canada.

    WTF?

Well I work with the US Border Patrol as part of my USCG Det down here in Texas. From what I'm seeing on complaints against the US Border Patrol, Washington State Region has the most when compared against say Ontario, Alberta or the Canuk desert. The region over by Quebec comes in close 2nd. Very interesting although. Be glad you're not coming to and from Mexico into the US or Mexico, it 10x worse treatment and we and Mexican have been nailing Hezbollah and other nastiness trying to enter and also dealing with Cartels.

It works both ways. The same will happen if coming to Canada. The moment you mention g/f or b/f at the border, you've pretty much guaranteed you'll be turned back.

Again, she has been going like this every weekend for over 2 years. Always said she went to visit her bf.

A guy had won a Superbowl VIP thing. The Superbowl paid for everything. He was stopped in Toronto from boarding the flight over a $50 possession of pot fine from 20-some years ago. Yes, he had been out of the country before.

I was talking to a guard who was freezing his ass off last week. It wasn't even cold  So I ask him, how can you be cold, it is awesome out! He says I am from California.
    What are you doing HERE??
    Prevent from getting shot.

    Yeah, fair point

Yeah, well I won't argue they can be a bit annoying at times. Just saying my bets are on there is a whole different story we're not being told here. 8 hours and questions for access etc. like he claims are not normal by any means.

I'm inclined to agree with you. Definitely more to this than what is stated.

I always read news stories with the knowledge that a chunk of the facts are missing for one reason or another. Mostly because, if all the facts were presented it wouldn't be as interesting a story or generate the reactions to it. Learned that firsthand many years ago.

But then again, in general, travel to and from the USA has changed dramatically from how it was pre-9/11. It will never go back to how simple it used to be, which is really a shame, but it is the way it is now.

I've never had an issue crossing the border into the states, but I find coming back into Canada to be a major ass pain.

Used to cross lots. When they asked the purpose of our visit, we'd tell them "to shop til we drop" and they'd wave you through with a welcome.
On the way home everyone would 'avoid the line with the female guard' at all costs....

I agree. I've always found the assholes to be Canadian customs when I have had a rare annoyance The American custom agents were very professional and courteous. Even going through LAX in December. Going through Customs in Winnipeg took a while only because we had stuff being shipped in and we had to choose between the $2 400 claim or the $10 000 but the guy was very helpful and polite stating he wanted to make sure we didn't get dinged for duty we didn't owe
