Landlords are calling for tougher rules after being taken for several thousand dollars by pro scam-artist tenants who never pay rent and work the system to delay eviction for months.
Wow, fuck those judges who actually allowed bad tenants to stay in their rental properties. There is no way we'd allow a tenant who did not pay rent, let alone a deposit to stay in our rental properties for THAT long. Luckily we have apartment buildings, and not homes (so it'd be difficult to break a window to gain access), so changing locks is a quick solution to bad tenants.
Of course, we actually make sure said first month+safety deposit actually goes through, and generally, we get either government cheques or cash, so we've been pretty lucky.
I have to admit as a landlord, I'm less than trusting. I typically ask for several references, a month's deposit (which has to clear before they can move in), and do my best.
Still, there are always going to be scum like this Holtby fellow who take advantage of the system, so all you can do is hope that you don't get one of them as a renter.
