Within a few weeks, Gov. Gen. David Johnston will bestow a final batch of bravery decorations on Canadian troops who fought in southern Afghanistan, but the list likely won't include the nation's highest battle honour: the Victoria Cross.
I love the "times have changed" argument. Obviously said by a guy who NEVER had rounds zinging past him. A bullet or shrapnell from 1915 will fuck you up just as well as a bullet or shrapnell from 2012.
Although I would love to see someone get a VC, I don't like the way this campaign is going. You can't just demand that SOMEBODY be given a VC on the basis that "surely" SOMEBODY must have earned one. You can't ask DND to go look for an act of bravery with the pre-determined pupose of handing out a VC for it. And the "but but the Yanks and Aussies did it!" doesn't hold water either. This argument is missing something....an actual soldier's name and description of his heroic actions. It would not be beyond our politicians to hand out a VC simply to play to the media. If there is a soldier deserving of a VC, there needs to be a public campaign for that solider and his actions specifically and I will get behind it such as the soldier in Korea.
But it's not right to ask the GG to decide to hand out a VC first, then go looking for a chest to hang it on, it undermines the entire honours system. This isn't the equivalent of the Medal of Honor, despite the article's suggestion. It's much more integritous.

I'm sure there have been some VC moments out of the past decade in Afghanistan. Makes one wonder who's being vetting the gong synopsis flow.
The whole Honors and Awards system is screwy. I know three people that all received the same write up & nomination and one got the MMV, one got a Mention in Dispatches and one got a Task Force Commendation.

Love it! Awesome usage BF!
Irregardless" is still like nails on a chalkboard for me, however.

No, it's a word alright! I checked it in my old-school and recent issue of the Oxford dictionary, as in a real book with paper and print!

Somebody needs to update the interwebs.
I think we will always need a decent dictionary and thesaurus. Nothing on-line is up to the job.
