Jose Calderon scored eight of his 19 points in the final 44 seconds, then eluded defenders frantically trying to foul him to run out the clock as Spain held on to beat winless Britain 79-78 in Olympic men's basketball Thursday.

    In one sense you can't blame the US for putting the hammer down since maybe Nigeria should have STFU about not being intimidated. :roll:

    In pro sports it's an proven fact that you don't provoke your opponent and this just proves that point.

    At least the Nigerian coach has a sense of humor, in an interview before the game, when asked who he thought would win the gold medal his response was.....one of three teams.... the Americans, Team USA or the United States..... :D

    Agreed. Running the score up that much is totaly classless. Running the score up in professianal sports is one thing, thats your job. No one wants to hear a millionaire whine about the score being ran up on them. They can play harder,or step aside and let someone with more drive take thier place. Sportsmanship should play a bigger role in amateur sports. I realize that these NBA athletes are not amateurs. They are however at the Olympics, and should act accordingly. I want my athletes to win, but you don't have to be a total douche in the process.

    The Nigerians were talking up a good game before the game and then they got their butts handed to them in response. The part that was 'classless' came from the Nigerians' trash talking, not the response.

    Is this even news ? Would have been news if Nigeria beat the US by even 1 point or even drew. But this is certainly not news.

    Weren't similar complaints brought against our Women's Hockey team? And we defended them on the basis that it would be insulting to have a team take it easy on us? Oh that's right. Lets stay consistent folks.

    If I were the Nigerian coach, I would have had my players just stand at the sidelines and let the Americans score as much as they wanted on nobody. "See if you can score 1,000, assholes, we won't try to stop you."

    Why? Would you do the same thing if you were the Italian women's hockey coach after we beat them like 16 - 0?

    R=UP

    Not sure if points scored could count towards placements, like it does in hockey, though.
