Wining and dining at Canada's embassies abroad escaped the axe as the rest of the federal government faced across-the-board budget cuts. Gordon Campbell, the high commissioner to the United Kingdom, tops all spenders so far this year.

Former British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell is racking up the biggest hospitality tab so far this year.

In the first five months of 2012, the high commissioner to the United Kingdom has billed $67,026 on dinners, lunches, and cocktail receptions. He's also billed three tuxedo rentals at a cost of $600.

The top diplomat in Washington, Gary Doer, is among the more frugal ambassadors, spending just $2,682 on hospitality in the five-month period.

More than likely, he'll get a pass from the media and pundits on this one. Any "outrage" will be short lived.

I don't see what the big deal is. I also assume that the first year or so would be high because they're making new contacts and developing relationships. BBQs in the back yard really don't cut it in the big leagues. Also the UK is a fairly expensive place because of the exchange rate alone.

Just like G-8 Summit meetings and other high-end meetings, that is the cost of doing business. And as Regina noted, the UK isn't a cheap place.
